If I were to run for political office and wave around a copy of L. Ron Hubbard's "Dianetics," it would no doubt ruin me. But if I waved around a copy of Ayn Rand's no less insane "Atlas Shrugged" I would find support rushing toward me from all quarters from Rush Limbaugh, Ron Paul and even many supposedly liberal Dartmouth students. The Ayn Rand virus is one of the most pernicious in the world today. Politicians regularly tout her ideas yet these ideas led her to make outrageous moral judgments.

An axe-wielding Christ-figure stands before a fallen cross and a junk heap of shattered cultural symbols. Small, ghostly children stand in the shadow of a zombie-like schoolteacher, their gray-and-black schoolhouse looming in the distance. A gray-skinned Hernan Cortez stands in front of his burning ships, standing over piles of naked Native bodies lying at his feet.

The Big Green (13-10, 4-8 Ivy) went into their penultimate weekend of the regular season against Yale, a team which holds a perfect home record this season. Yale (16-7, 10-2 Ivy) displayed their ability to dominate by defeating Dartmouth in three straight games 25-8, 25-10 and 25-17.

My favorite place to read at Dartmouth is not actually on campus. Lounging on the Green with a book is nice, of course, but when it comes to curling up on a cushy sofa with a great view and a good book, the Howe Library Hanover's charming and impressive public library has simply got campus beat. No offense, Baker-Berry, but you kind of kill my soul.

If you thought last Fall's "The Rocky Horror Show" was crazy, get ready for this term's Mainstage production. William Shakespeare's "Two Gentlemen of Verona" will not only include lots of singing and dancing, but also a rock band, a projector and, last but not least, a live dog. Other surprises involving the audience will be a part of the performance as well.

Universities with Division I sports teams are seeing an increase in graduation rates for student-athletes, The Washington Post reported. According to a study conducted by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, 79 percent of student-athletes who matriculated in 2003 to Division I schools graduated, a five-point increase since the start of the NCAA's nine-year study. Colgate University led the division with a graduation rate of 100 percent, with Notre Dame University and Loyola University close behind with 99 percent and 97 percent respectively. The NCAA reported that female athletes, with an overall 87 percent graduation rate, graduated at a significantly higher rate than male athletes, whose graduation rate is 72 percent, according to The Washington Post.

Iraq and Afghanistan veterans seeking medical treatment from Department of Veterans Affairs facilities are far more likely to require medical assistance for mental health difficulties than for physical injuries, according to a study published this month by researchers from Dartmouth Medical School and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. One of every five veterans who sought treatment for pain were also diagnosed with mental health disorders, according to Tracy Stecker, a DMS psychiatric researcher who worked on the study.
