"Shallow Hal" has all of the classic gags of a Farrelly brothers' film. Something separates it, however, from the purely slapstick and grotesque humor of their prior flicks such as "There's Something About Mary" and "Dumb and Dumber." "Shallow Hal" is surprisingly moving and provides audiences not only with cheap laughs but also with a worthwhile message: that beauty is only skin deep.

All preseason signs pointed toward the possibility of an ugly season for the Dartmouth men's basketball team. The team lost two key members of the Class of 2001, Ian McGinnis and Greg Buth, to graduation, not to mention senior Jay Jenckes, who decided not to continue with the team in his final year. But Dartmouth may still be able to have some success this season if it can consistently take it to smaller teams the way it did against St. Francis Xavier last Friday night.

This past weekend in Amherst, Mass., the undefeated Dartmouth Woman's Rugby Club became the 2001 Northeastern Champions. The team slugged Cornell on Saturday and the University of Massachusetts on Sunday by an extremely impressive combined score of 87-10. The title earns the club a bid to the National Championship Tournament this coming spring.

When Dartmouth appeared onscreen during the NCAA bid announcements yesterday afternoon, 24 players, three coaches and a large group of supporters screamed in relief. After the agony had been drawn out as long as was humanly bearable, Dartmouth (9-4-1) was one of the last eight teams out of 64 to be announced.

About a week and a half ago I bought a new pair of running shoes (not that I go running, mind you, but I am lazy and think they're the comfiest). It was time. I've had the same pair of sneakers for almost two years, even bringing them back into rotation after buying a different pair a year ago; they are the best shoes I've ever owned, and I did my best to save them, maintain them and keep them wearable. But eventually holes ripped and soles started to peel. And there's nothing else I can do.

Last weekend, when two female students were assaulted on campus, we were reminded that despite its rural setting, Dartmouth is not insulated from safety concerns. Students' distress was worsened by the Dartmouth administration's painfully slow reaction to these events.
