Thanks to victories over Yale and Brown Universities at Leede Arena this weekend, the volleyball team climbed into a first-place tie with rival Harvard University for the top spot in the League. On Friday, the Big Green (7-7, 4-1 Ivy) took down one of last year’s Ivy co-champions, the Yale Bulldogs (8-6, 3-2 Ivy), by a three-sets-to-one margin. On Saturday, Dartmouth beat Brown (8-8, 2-3 Ivy) in straight sets for the Big Green’s third-straight Ivy win. Dartmouth’s win over Yale was the Big Green’s first victory against the Bulldogs since Nov. 7, 2009.

After enough swings, a baseball bat becomes an extension of the clean-up hitter’s arm. Skates define the way a defenseman relates to winter. Jerseys become identities franchise players wear day and night. The game the athlete plays becomes a fundamental part of who he is, and in many cases, that’s a good thing.

Before walking into The Mirror’s weekly story assignment meeting last week, the so-called “M.R.S. Degree” was a completely unfamiliar concept to me. The meaning wasn’t exactly hard to discern after an introduction to the idea from my editors and a few context clues, but even then I was confused — does such a thing still exist in our seemingly modern and progressive times?

Led by an exciting second-place overall performance from Julia Calbi ’19, the women’s golf team opened its 2015-2016 season with a solid fourth-place finish among the field of 11 teams at the Chesapeake Bay Invitational on the par-72 United States Naval Academy golf course. Despite not having a single golfer finish in the top five individuals, the University of Pennsylvania won the event on the strength of a tournament-low 301 second-round score and a 61-over-par finish on the weekend.

In 1972, Bill Pence and his wife Stella Pence transformed an old opera house into a functional theater and screened two movies there. The opera-house-turned-theater was in Telluride, Colorado, and the Telluride Film Festival was born.

Dartmouth failed to crack the top 10 on the U.S. News and World Report’s annual ranking of national universities for the second consecutive year, falling to a tie for 12th place with Northwestern University. The College also rose in the publication’s best undergraduate teaching list, rising from fourth to second place this year, although the College had ranked first for multiple years prior to 2014.

Jumping in to sophomore summer from an off-term in Pittsburgh, I expected to miss the bustle of the city, the freedom of empty evenings after work and the seemingly endless things to explore. But after six weeks back on campus and back in the dorms, I’m starting to realize that what I’m longing for the most is my dumpy apartment, broken heating and dingy kitchen.

From the outside, last week’s fourth-place finish at the Intercollegiate Sailing Association Women’s National Championships might look like a disappointment for the two-time defending champion women’s sailing team. It might seem a pity that the team’s sole senior, two-time Quantum Women’s Sailor of the Year Deirdre Lambert ’15, went home without any hardware.

All three rowing teams were in post-season action this weekend, each competing for a bid to their national championship. The No. 12 heavyweight men earned a bid to the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Regatta with a varsity finish of 11th at the EARC Sprints Regatta. The lightweight men saw their season come to an end when they missed their qualification to the IRA regatta by one spot, finishing ninth at Eastern Sprints, less than three seconds behind the United States Naval Academy. The women’s crew team was also disappointed, finishing tied with Columbia University for seventh at the Ivy League Championship this weekend, a slight slip from last year’s fifth-place team finish but not enough to earn a NCAA tournament bid. Brown University ultimately took the Ivy crown for the women.

After securing the Big Green its first Ivy League championship in three years this past fall, it was fitting for the 2014 men’s soccer team to produce one of the highest numbers of athletes to sign professional contracts in recent program history.

After receiving its first bid to the NCAA tournament in program history, the women’s tennis team defeated No. 49 College of William and Mary in the opening round before falling to No. 2 University of North Carolina, last year’s runner-up for the title. The first post-season win for the Big Green provided a culminating end to a season that saw the Dartmouth tennis program reach new heights, despite falling short of the Ivy League title.

We’ve come to one of the biggest sports weekends of the year, with the NHL and NBA playoffs in full swing and the Kentucky Derby set for Saturday. Despite the national sports scene, it is a relatively quiet weekend for Big Green athletics, as only six teams are in action. We’re taking a different approach to this week’s primer, and rather than focusing solely on the Big Green’s competitions, we’re choosing one Dartmouth series and a second Ivy League game that directly impacts the Big Green.

In the women’s tennis team’s final game of the regular season, the No. 31 Big Green (18-5, 5-2 Ivy) beat Harvard University (7-12, 0-7 Ivy), who occupies last place in the Ivy League 5-2, at the Murr Tennis Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Dartmouth ended the year in second place among the Ivies, behind only Princeton University (12-8, 6-1 Ivy). With the win, the women will likely secure a spot in the NCAA Women’s Tennis National Championships, which begins May 14.

Stoic and engaged, Alex Adelabu ’15 raises his hand in the Rockefeller Global Leadership Program to contribute his own perspective on intercultural awareness. The Big Green men’s soccer team wrapped up an Ivy League title in the fall, and Adelabu has been keeping busy. Considering his background, he will have a lot to share.

On a Friday night in the fall of 2012, many of the incoming freshmen were taking their first stroll down Webster Avenue, taking their turns checking out the Greek houses during their introduction to campus. For some, it was an exhilarating time — maybe a little scary. Yet the first few weeks of college are a time for reinvention, and it’s no secret that many students enjoy the opportunity to create new identities for themselves after stepping off the coach.

The No. 31 women’s tennis team beat Brown University (10-9, 3-3 Ivy) 4-3 at home on Friday and traveled to Yale University on Sunday, winning by the same 4-3 scoreline. The team’s last five conference matches have been decided 4-3, and the Big Green has been able to scrape out four of those five wins, with its only loss in the batch coming against Princeton University (12-8, 6-1 Ivy), which clinched the 2015 Ivy League title — its second straight — with a win over Cornell University on Sunday.
