"We could call you Maddy or Dommy," Boylan said one of her sons suggested. "Dommy didn't stick but Maddy did."

We all know the reputation of the average college athlete: these men enjoy the weight room and banging hot chicks. But, what about ex-athletes? They, too, enjoy the weight room and banging hot chicks, though with a slightly slower heart-rate recovery time.

The spectacle was not an attempt by Anheuser-Busch to get a head-start on next weekend's chariot races, but a celebration of the wedding of Fairlee, Vt., native Kathryn Thatcher to August Busch IV, heir to the Anheuser-Busch empire. The couple chose the Hanover Inn to host their wedding reception, which followed the Bradford, Vt. ceremony.

The op-ed by Larry Morse '56, "The Hill Winds Call Fifty Years Later," (June 10) is for me, perhaps, the ghost of alumnus future. I am cranky by nature, and goodness knows how disaffected I will be by the time 2053 rolls around. So, maybe I shouldn't throw stones. Well, okay, just a few.

The 50th reunion for the Class of 1956 is coming up this weekend, and it carries a dismal message: We will not merely die. Rather, we, who are among the last members of the real Dartmouth, will go extinct, a different matter altogether. How many members of the real Dartmouth remain? I have no idea, but the numbers will become zero fairly soon, and the Men of Dartmouth will be gone forever.

While everything about Green Key is quintessentially Dartmouth, the Big Green is not the only college with a distinct spring festival. At schools across the nation, study-weary students eagerly anticipate fun and frivolity in the brightening spring weather.

Before Christopher Columbus died, he left instructions for his epitaph. The controversial explorer wanted his body to be buried under a stone engraved with the words "Let me not be confused forever." However, to this day, it seems that we are all pretty confused by Columbus, and confused in general for that matter -- especially here at Dartmouth.

While many students are unaware that part of their jogging route is named for a member of the Mohegan tribe who lived during the 18th century, the lecture that College historian and former history professor Jere Daniell '55 gave Tuesday in Dartmouth Hall aimed to elucidate that and other contributions that Native Americans have made to Dartmouth.

I believe it was the renowned entrepreneur Charles Edward Cheese who once said, "Birthdays are for suckers." Twenty-five years ago, this cheese-whiz caught onto the fact that society is full of money-shredding twelve-and-under year olds, most of whom were born at one point or another. Cheese realized that he could convince parents that birthdays should be honored with ticket-spewing, pepperoni-padded, token-choking fun and that this "fun" would make him rich, and everyone would be too intimidated by his gold coins to give him a hard time about how he refuses to come out of that frightening mouse costume.

Here at Dartmouth, the words "Winter Carnival" bring to mind memories of snow sculptures on the Green, rowdy frat parties to beat the winter blues and huge crowds of alumni and friends. But elsewhere, the term brings its own images and memories, as schools like Bates College, Williams College and Middlebury College celebrate their own winter carnivals.

In the 80-year history of the Carnival snow sculpture, the statues have changed and evolved, reflecting the interests and values of Dartmouth students.

Humans are categorizing creatures. For whatever Darwinian reason, the ability to distinguish similar entities in our minds was a trait that contributed to our apparent victory in the survival of the fittest. However, what was for millennia a positive survival tool has outlived its use, and the time has come for us to use other powerful tools -- intellect and reason -- to defeat the enemies of modern freedom.

It is a shame that our society and, more importantly, our campus have arrived at a point where political correctness is demanded and, unfortunately, necessary. Being PC appears almost necessary nowadays because the consequences of a politically incorrect statement or action are so great. Radical political correctness maniacs will not hesitate to exploit a minor breach of PC and make an issue out of it. Too many people take themselves way too seriously and ultimately stir up unnecessary controversy.

In 1971, Orlando, Florida became every child's favorite place when Walt Disney World opened its gates. In 1971, Apollo 14 successfully landed on the moon and Alan Shepard played his famous game of lunar golf. In 1971, South Vietnamese troops, backed by American air and artillery support, invaded Laos. In 1971, the Nasdaq stock index showed its face for the first time. In 1971, Bruce Lee's "Fists of Fury" hit the box office. And in 1971, the Native Americans at Dartmouth released a statement requesting that the Dartmouth "Indian" symbol cease to represent our school as the mascot.

Best known on campus as Dartmouth's unofficial mascot, Keggy the Keg is truly much more. Behind the green stockings, bulging eyes and silver paint lies a true Dartmouth role-model.

In the final days of errands and goodbyes before the members of the Class of 2009 pack up their cars and drive to the airport, the future first-years -- full of excitement and nerves -- may wonder about the place where they will be spending the next four years.
