I've been trying to get a friend of mine to pick up her violin and play some duets with me. She's very reluctant and very concerned that her playing isn't good enough. I think this is a common sentiment among many talented amateur musicians, which makes me think that what Dartmouth needs more of is spaces for modest talent to play a little and get comfortable with a friendly audience.

As observers point to the increasing disparity between rich and poor, between the lives of the hopeful and of the hopeless, those of us in higher education should wonder whether we contribute to the problem. A good education has always been the most widely acceptable answer to the problem of social class. Education, it is thought, enables citizens of all backgrounds to enjoy the fruits of an open society.

I had quite a few memorable conversations in Spring 1996 during the annual Admissions Office phone-athon. Sure, I agreed to call some prospectives and encourage them to matriculate at my beloved college. I would tell them about the small class sizes, the renowned Dartmouth school spirit, my exciting freshman fall, and overall why I remained convinced that I made the right choice in coming to this school.
