Last week, the Hanover Planning Board released a draft of its Sustainability Master Plan for public view –– the Town’s first such plan since 2003. The Board held two open house meetings to introduce students and other community members to the plan on Oct. 18 and 19.

On Oct. 19, members of the Dartmouth community attended a memorial service on the Collis Lawn co-hosted by the Palestine Solidarity Coalition and Al-Nur, the Muslim student association, in memory of Israeli and Palestinian lives lost in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Amber Barnato is the director of Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice and a physician health services researcher with a focus on end-of-life decision making. She currently leads a team of researchers that have been awarded a $16.2 million grant from the National Institute on Aging. The five-year renewal grant will allow Barnato and her team to continue researching inequities in healthcare for adults with Alzheimer’s and dementia-related diseases. The team’s study includes four key projects, including Barnato’s research project, which focuses on the regional policies of home and community-based services for adults with dementia.

On Tuesday, Oct. 10 and Thursday, Oct. 12, the Jewish studies and Middle Eastern studies programs held public events titled “A Discussion on the Horrific Events Unfolding in Israel and Gaza” to consider the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Participating in the discussions were Jewish studies program chair Susannah Heschel, Middle Eastern studies senior lecturer Ezzedine Fishere, Middle Eastern studies professor Jonathan Smolin and government visiting professor Bernard Avishai.

For the past few weeks, graduate students have been bargaining with the Dartmouth administration after graduate students overwhelmingly voted to unionize as the Graduate Organized Laborers of Dartmouth. Although Dartmouth faculty work closely with the administration and serve in administrative roles on the level of departments and programs, the faculty are not the party that we are negotiating a contract with, and we do not view them as our opposition. In fact, the opposite is true. We work closely with faculty every day to advance our research and develop as scholars. Many of us hope to be faculty in the future, and our relationships with our advisors are indispensable to the process of developing the skills needed to perform research. Most of us would not be here today if not for faculty mentors who inspired and guided us towards pursuing a career in academic research.

Upon first glance, ARTH 38.04, “Food and Art: A Global History,” may seem like your typical discussion-based course, with readings and class presentations taking center stage. But when I decided to sit in on the class, I found myself surrounded by students chopping apples and measuring salt onto small tasting plates. In small groups of three, students began rotating between stations, sampling different types of sugars, salts, maple syrups, spices and apples. Afterwards, they began to input their observations into a spreadsheet, including the color, flavor, smell and any other observations.

On Oct. 1, the Dartmouth Student Government Senate met for its third weekly meeting of the fall term. Led by student body president Jessica Chiriboga ’24, the Senate discussed updates in campus technology, housing construction projects and new teletherapy rooms on campus.

There was an air of mystery in the Class of 1953 Commons this summer. With floor to ceiling tarps covering the once beloved sandwich and salad station, the construction of “The A9” station — a new dining serving area that is free of the top nine allergens: dairy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, sesame, wheat and soy — garnered curiosity among students.

On Sunday, Sept. 10, our team came together and decided to sign representation cards with the Dartmouth staff union, SEIU Local 560. It is our intention to use this column to describe our common motivation for pursuing unionization, which is rooted not only in a desire to improve our own working conditions, but also in a hope of catalyzing the transformation of college sports into a less exploitative business.

Every fall, a new group of eager minds floods Dartmouth’s historic campus. Along with suitcases filled with clothes and dorm bedding, these first-years carry ambitions, dreams and perhaps a heaping dose of nerves. There to guide them on their journey are Orientation Leaders or “OLs”: a select group of upperclassmen ready to ease concerns, foster connections and offer a helping hand along the way. They serve as the grounding force that allows first-years to acclimate to the College environment.

As an undergraduate-focused R1 institution, Dartmouth sits at an intersection between research and teaching. According to some professors, the College prioritizes both aspects of the “teacher scholar mindset,” encouraging professors to equally prioritize their research and undergraduate teaching. This model provides several advantages, such as collaboration with other professors across disciplines, teaching that inspires novel research and access to substantial funding.
