From Feb. 22 to 24, the Hanunder Arts Festival transformed Sawtooth Kitchen into a space for the Dartmouth arts community to showcase student films, music and visual arts. The festival was produced by the Hopkins Center for the Arts fellows and their advisors from the staff Daniel Burmester and Lucy Biberman ’23.

Currently, 15 bills have been introduced in the New Hampshire legislature to limit the rights of transgender people. House Bill 619, which outlines which genital reconstructive surgeries are allowed to be performed on minors and which are not, passed through the New Hampshire House of Representatives in January and is scheduled to reach the state Senate in March. This bill, sponsored by eight Republican senators, contains several inaccurate words when referring to transgender healthcare. The phrase “gender reassignment surgery” itself is considered outdated by the medical community, which uses the term “gender-affirming care” to describe the variety of mental and physical healthcare options available to transgender people. The bill also contains the word “genitalia” 21 times and the word “transgender” a grand total of zero times. This is not the first time that Republican policymakers have displayed a shameless obsession over the genitals of children to misrepresent the nuances of transgender experiences.

Recently, a controversy arose on campus over the vandalism of a Winter Carnival ice sculpture that displayed the title “River2Sea” and portrayed the territory of both Israel and Palestine enveloped by a Palestinian flag. We can hold two truths at the same time: As a community, we should condemn this vandalism — destructive action undermines constructive discourse. We must also thoughtfully examine the problematic implications of the sculpture and its title.

In February 2022, Nathan Syvash ’25 — a freshman at the time — received a text message from one of his friends with news of Russia’s attack on Kyiv, Syvash’s home. As the reality of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine set in, Syvash said he immediately called his parents.

Brimming with dark humor and painfully unaware characters, R.F. Kuang’s novel “Yellowface” is a satire that unpacks the difficulty of being an Asian writer in today’s industry. The novel evokes instances of white authors profiting from writing stories about the suffering of non-white communities and real-life, race-based literary controversies — like the “Who is the Bad Art Friend?” feud — a nearly decade-long dispute between writers Sonya Larson and Dawn Dorland regarding race, authorship and friendship that became publicized by the 2021 New York Times article of the same name. Thematically, “Yellowface” is entrenched in the current dialogue regarding the ownership of culture and identity in literature. To tell this tale, Kuang masterfully crafts the narration of her main character to create a voice that is both convincing and appalling.

This year’s Oscar-nominated, live-action shorts are some of the most compelling pieces of cinema that I have ever had the privilege of viewing. Each of the films shown at the Hopkins Center for the Arts’ screening of the program tells an unforgettable, emotional story that feels highly relevant amidst the tumultuous global events of today's world. The three shorts in this review gripped audiences for their ability to tell stories that showcase how characters process tragedy, trauma, and grief.

On Wednesday, Feb. 14, College President Sian Beilock, Provost David Kotz and Dean of the College Scott Brown met with approximately 50 to 70 students at open office hours from 12 to 12:45 p.m. Many students present voiced their concerns with the College’s reinstatement of its test-mandatory admissions policy on Feb. 5, though the office hours were open to “anyone who wanted to discuss a question or idea with the president and provost,” according to an email statement by Kotz.

On Feb. 5, Pavel Sulyandziga, a member of the Udege people of Russia’s Far East and a visiting scholar at Dartmouth, addressed East European, Eurasian, and Russian Studies professor Tatiana Filimonova’s class, RUSS 38.23, “Imagining Siberia.” He discussed his ongoing political and environmental activism following his exile from Russia.

On Feb. 5, the screening tour of the 2023 documentary film “Israelism” came to Dartmouth. The screening, which was held in Filene Auditorium, was co-hosted by the Coalition for Immigration Reform and Equality at Dartmouth and the Palestine Solidarity Coalition. A range of students and local community members attended the screening, which was followed by a Q&A session over Zoom with co-director Sam Eilertsen.

Music is embedded in our college experiences — whether it be belting out lyrics with friends on a night out or stumbling across a new favorite song that ingrains itself in your mind. Dartmouth’s campus is riddled with musicians — songwriters, producers, instrumentalists, singers and more. However, student musicians sometimes struggle with limited performance opportunities and the need to cater to general audiences rather than being able to explore artistically.

It’s Feb. 14, which means the Dartmouth listserv has been teasing me with its annual, obnoxious onslaught of catfish flitzes all week. One more subject line in the realm of “are you extremely alone?” or “heart-shaped pizza for fucked attachment styles in Common Ground,” and I’ll hit reply all. Yes, I’m alone. No, I don’t want to drink pink lemonade and talk about it. Thanks for flooding my inbox, though.

Duke Ellington. The Clash. Bruce Springsteen. They’re all internationally famous musicians, but they have something else in common — each one has performed at Dartmouth. On campus, live music is a staple of the College’s social scene, with a robust student band culture. Despite its rural location, Dartmouth has also been able to draw big-time artists to perform at both smaller gigs and full-scale concerts like Fallapallooza and Green Key.

As members of Access Dartmouth, a student group dedicated to student accessibility, we are writing to oppose President Sian Leah Beilock’s decision to reinstate the standardized testing requirement for undergraduate admissions. This decision will harm the admissions chances of disabled students, a group that has for far too long been overlooked in higher education. Disabled students are equally capable of excelling at Dartmouth and equally deserving of inclusion and opportunity.
