While hot dogs and hamburgers are often the staple of summer meals, senior Ross Markwort's diet over the past two months was unusually mineral-rich. The bookstore is open again, Main Street is kickin', wool sweaters have replaced bikinis and Ben and J. Lo have finally called it quits. Yes, alas, the summer is over. But before you start to reminisce about Tubestock memories and beachside debauchery, take a look at this fall's television line-up.

Most people don't get the opportunity to attend their own wake. As Jeff Goldblum so famously noted in "The Big Chill," "they throw a great party for you on the one day they know you can't come." However, Warren Zevon's wake lasted for several months, and he was there for every day of it as he recorded his final album "The Wind."

For those of you that do not know, Jay Fiedler is a '94 alumnus from Dartmouth who is now the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. In short, Dartmouth has more starting quarterbacks in the NFL than Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma, USC, Alabama, Notre Dame and many other big name schools, making Fiedler a big deal for Dartmouth and the Ivy League. This week's Fiedler Report is a little different than the previous articles over the last two years. Somehow, someway, I scored a press pass to the Miami Dolphins versus New York Jets game last Sunday. The following is a rundown of my day.

With new starters at several positions, including quarterback, running back and punter, the Big Green football team would have benefited from an opening game against a mediocre opponent, against whom Dartmouth could work out the kinks, while the new starters could settle into their roles en route to a Big Green victory.

This past interim -- that short pseudo-summer between the legendary sophomore Summer term and this Fall term -- I rediscovered something. It wasn't television, free time or even sleep. No, I rediscovered something far more interesting, entertaining and satisfying than any of those things. This interim I rediscovered collegiate athletics.

If mass media counts as a barometer of public interest, we are sensationalists. We need to be entertained, and in this age, sensational or "breaking" news panders to that need. Which is why the international media looks at India through a monochromatic kaleidoscope sprinkled with Hindu-Muslim conflicts. Enough violence to squeeze into your daily plate of world news. Sadly, no topic has received more glib coverage than communal conflict in India.

To be honest, I wasn't always an enthusiast of the Dartmouth Outing Club. Nor did I think I was capable of posessing all the energy that other DOC members had. I remember arriving on campus to leave for my freshman trip and then a couple of days later arriving at the Moosilauke lodge: both times I was blown away by the crews and the amount of time and energy they devoted to make my DOC trip a success. I was shocked to find out that someone would sacrifice summer money and sleep to entertain lowly freshmen -- and what was even more surprising was the fact that they had to apply to be sleep and money deprived.
