One of my closest friends is a big hugger. If you asked me for an example of a person whose primary love language was physical touch, I would immediately direct you to her. This trait of hers, however, caught me a bit off guard when we first became friends during our freshman fall. If you asked me then for an example of a person whose primary love language was definitely not physical touch, I would have pointed to myself.
You’ve caught me in a rather heightened state of stress this week, Mirror. Among other things, waking up in the middle of the night due to the newly sub-40 degree temperatures, having to guess my way through a midterm at 8:50 a.m. last Wednesday and finding a topic for this week’s Editor’s Note have all made their way onto my recent list of stressors.

If you are a frequent reader of these editor’s notes, you might have noticed that these are often rather personal reflections. They are vulnerable and self-aware, and I’ve loved reading them long before I became tasked with writing my own.
Dear Freak of the Week,
On August 30, 2023, I entered my freshman dorm room for the first time, accompanied by my suitcases and parents. The next day, I attempted my first walk around Occom Pond. I got lost at some point. The day after that, I made my first visit to the poster store in town with someone I met during lunch. A small poster of a 1912 oil painting called “The Bicycle Race” caught my eye, and I bought it for my dorm.
I’ve found myself walking more slowly lately. It isn’t a conscious choice. I think I just exist in less of a rush.
Having chosen to attend college in a place that’s home to just over 12,000 people, one might hold a natural appreciation for small towns like Hanover. But even those allured by the quaintness of New England may yearn for some more excitement now and then — and a weekend in Montréal, Québec just might do the trick.

It’s that time of the year again.
One of Dartmouth’s most cited drawbacks is its location. Even students who love New Hampshire’s rural, mountainous scenery feel the itch to run away to a city or to get away for the weekend. With travel comes fun, but also stress. What should you do? Where should you go? Who should you go with?
Last fall, I arrived on campus in awe of Dartmouth’s beauty.
Whether he’s spotted in Baker-Berry Library or waddling around the Green, Keggy the Keg always stands out in a crowd.
As a first-year student on the Ivy Unlimited meal plan — which offers unlimited swipes into the Class of 1953 Commons, known colloquially as Foco — I eat many-a-bite at the College’s main dining hall. In all my meals there, I’ve realized that I gravitate toward one food station much more often than the others — the soup station.
As I walked down Main Street this week, I found comfort in the familiar sights of the neighborhood: residents walking their dogs, parents chasing after rambunctious children and, of course, fellow Dartmouth students making emergency CVS runs, devouring a toasted bagel at The Works or scouting out a study spot at Starbucks.
When asked to picture a Dartmouth tradition, events such as the Homecoming bonfire, the annual snowball fight and Green Key might come to mind. While these school-wide events draw large crowds and attention, smaller communities — such as individual friend groups or campus organizations — have created their own unique traditions.
At Dartmouth, students often form tight-knit communities built upon both lifting each other up and leaning on each other when needed. Put simply, students prioritize their support for each other. There are few better examples of that on campus than within Sexual Assault Peer Alliance.

Central to beloved Dartmouth winter traditions such as the polar plunge, ice skating and bygone pond parties, Occom Pond has established itself as a staple of the Hanover community for decades. However, before the pond established its legacy, it was just a figment of Elizabeth Washburn Worthern’s imagination.
Rush is over, and new members now embark on the Greek life experience. In addition to attending their first formals and social events, one beloved tradition of joining a Greek organization is getting a “big” — typically an older member of the house who is a designated mentor and friend to a new member, or “little.”
