With the match tied 8-8-2, mayhem broke loose. A well-placed return led to a tough dig. The ball popped into the air, high enough that a slam was inevitable. A paddle struck the ball with an undeniable velocity — but it was all for naught.

If asked about the state of the bar scene in the beautifully unsuspecting town of Hanover, most Dartmouth students might chuckle and respond with “it’s nonexistent” or “what bar scene?” Due to Greek life’s strong presence at Dartmouth, some students may not understand the appeal of bars and pubs such as Dunk’s Sports Grill or Murphy’s on the Green in this small town. However, for some, these town spaces offer somewhat of an escape from the typical Dartmouth social scene. This week, I spoke with those involved in the town nightlife scene to better understand what it has to offer. Bring your buddies and leave your car keys behind because your next Friday night might just be a bar crawl through Hanover.

On Monday through Friday, Collis Cafe prepares a variety of lunch options, but none seem to be more popular than the Collis Lunch Special. The Special — which changes every day but follows a loose weekly pattern — even has its own dedicated GroupMe chat titled “Collis Special @NOW.” The chat has more than 1,400 members, all eager to hear the day’s Special option.

Do you remember the moments leading up to when you opened a long-awaited college acceptance letter? Perhaps your heart beat fast enough to jump out of your chest and your family and friends shared words of affirmation. Maybe you then took a deep breath, gathered up your confidence and finally clicked the “open decision” button on the computer screen.

Roopika Risam is a researcher, writer and historian, as well as a new addition to the Dartmouth faculty this year in the film and media studies department and the comparative literature department. Her research centers around the digital humanities, which seeks to combine digital tools and disciplines with the conventional study of humanities subjects. She uses the digital humanities to understand and prevent historical biases and exclusions from continuing into the modern age as digital technologies grow and evolve: Currently, she is exploring how postcolonial scholars and critical theorists have shaped the field of public humanities, and she is maintaining an online project that features a data visualization of W.E.B. DuBois’s intellectual trajectory. This week, The Dartmouth sat down with Risam to discuss the power of the digital humanities.

As is often true of buildings on campus, there is a lot more to Rollins Chapel than meets the eye. The historic building reopened this winter after several terms of construction, and students are once again welcome to sit in its main nave for a moment of silence, listen to musicians play warm melodies or offer a prayer.

In the words of “The Office” character Kevin Malone, “I just want to lie on the beach and eat hot dogs. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.”

If you somehow haven’t noticed, Dartmouth is kind of in the middle of nowhere. There are two national chains — Dominos and Starbucks — and about a billion more trees. The tallest building in the area is an old clock tower whose highest room is closed to students for the majority of the year. From almost any outdoor location on campus, the sun is visible all day. These days, the Dartmouth “Big Green” could more appropriately be titled the “Big Red, Yellow and Orange” as the trees’ leaves change to beautiful fall colors. “Vox Clamantis in Deserto,” Latin for the Bible verse “a voice crying out in the wilderness,” seems like an appropriate motto for our wonderfully rural college.

New to campus and eager to learn about all that they may encounter at Dartmouth, many ’26s like myself often find themselves pondering the mystery that is the process of pledging a fraternity. “What could they possibly do to me? How far will they go?” we wonder. To our dismay, however, the hazing that has been fabled to accompany the pledging process, like the recipe for original Coca Cola, is a carefully guarded secret.
