A Virginia newspaper reported this week that star quarterback Michael Vick of Virginia Tech will skip his final two seasons of eligibility and declare for the NFL draft. Most experts project Vick as a top five pick, most likely going as the top choice overall to the San Diego Chargers. Vick is without a doubt the most exciting and athletic player in the college game right now. His running and passing ability have dazzled fans and competitors alike, and most have him pegged as next year's Heisman favorite. He can throw with his left or right hand. He's big. He's led Tech to two straight 11-1 seasons. And he's African American.

No controversy. No split polls. No debates concerning who the real national champion is. Oklahoma, lead by an incredible defense, defeated heavily favored Florida State 13-2 to finish the season 13-0 and capture the school's seventh national title. The Sooners' Orange Bowl triumph climaxed a very interesting bowl season and gave us an undisputed champion for the third year in a row.

A game involving two top-10 teams. The winner will likely take home the conference title and stay alive for the national title. The loser will be all but eliminated from both. What more could FSU-Clemson need to make the game exciting?

Think of great college football states -- states with multiple top-tier programs: Florida, Texas, Alabama, California, Michigan, Oregon. Wait, Oregon? That's right, Oregon. For years a seeming wasteland along the college football landscape, Oregon has suddenly become the football capital of the West Coast. The Ducks of Oregon and the Beavers of Oregon State are in contention for the Rose Bowl. The teams feature contrasting styles: Oregon's offense is good, but its strength is a downright overpowering defense; Oregon State has an explosive offense featuring the nation's fifth-ranked rusher, Ken Simonton. If both teams win out, which is not only possible but likely, they will face off on the last week of the regular season with identical 9-1 records, with the winner going to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. This game, dubbed the "Civil War" by Oregonians, has been meaningless for years outside the Northwest; now it has suddenly become the game of the year in the Pac-10.

The beast has awoken. The sleeping monster that was Oklahoma football the last decade is back in full force. The Sooners, who were a dominant football program throughout the 1970s and '80s, sank to being mediocre and then downright horrible in the '90s. But this is a new decade, and Oklahoma is coming off back-to-back victories over top-10 teams (Texas and Kansas State) in which they put up over 100 points combined. Their victory over then second-ranked Kansas State catapulted them to number three and four in the AP and coaches polls, respectively. In the last two years the Sooners have gone from sub .500 to having a legitimate shot at a conference and possibly a national title. Following an off week, Oklahoma will play top ranked Nebraska in what is shaping up to be a classic. To what can this remarkable turnaround be attributed? For starters, one of the best young coaching staffs in the nation and a quarterback gunning for the Heisman Trophy.

Who will be number one in college football? Who will sit atop the polls at the start of the New Year? This question has plagued sportswriters and fans alike throughout the decades. It's a particularly difficult question given the nature of college football. Upsets occur frequently, and this season has been no exception. Whoever starts the season at number one rarely finishes there. So who will it be?

There is one basic premise to this column: college football is infinitely superior to the pro version.
