On April 22 and 23, Dartmouth students elected Chukwuka Odigbo ’25 and Jon Pazen ’25 as student body president and student body vice president, respectively, according to past reporting by The Dartmouth. The pair defeated Matthew Kim ’25 and Alejandra Carrasco Alayo ’25 in the first contested election in three years.

Construction is set to begin on College-owned buildings located on the intersection of East Wheelock Street and North Park Street during the upcoming summer term, according to senior director of project management services Patrick O’Hern, who is overseeing the project. The buildings directly affected by the work include Alpha Phi sorority, Alpha Xi Delta sorority, the Ledyard apartments and McCulloch Hall.

On Feb. 26, the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding hosted Georgetown University professor at the Walsh School of Foreign Service Daniel Byman to discuss the war in Gaza. The event was called “Israel and Gaza: ‘Is There a Way Forward?’” and was moderated by government department Chair Benjamin Valentino.

Dartmouth Chabad Rabbi Moshe Gray visited Israel with Birthright, a non-profit organization that sends around 50,000 Jewish students from around the world to Israel every year on a free, 10-day heritage trip, according to their website. Gray, one of 20 educators from across the U.S. on the trip, gathered with other leaders of the Jewish community in late January to reimagine Birthright’s curriculum and bear witness to the state of Israel after the Hamas attacks on Oct. 7. Having returned from his trip, Gray recounted his experience with Birthright in Israel and the future of Birthright trips for Dartmouth’s Jewish community.

Low temperatures and snowy conditions have brought outdoor winter activities back to campus with a few adjustments this year. While the Dartmouth Outing Club and Outdoor Programs Office have adjusted their cross country ski and skate rental options, the ice skating rink has returned to the Green after a two-year absence and the annual snowball fight took place on Jan. 8.

Dartmouth Civics, Dartmouth Student Government and the Office of Student Life — which together make up the Dartmouth Votes coalition — hosted a voter registration drive on Nov. 6 in Collis Common Ground, which resulted in around 100 new voter registrations, according to Dartmouth Civics co-president Bea Burack ’25. The event also was sponsored by the Dartmouth NAACP, the Pi Theta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the Theta Beta Beta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and the Theta Zeta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc.

On Wednesday, Nov. 1 at noon, the Greek Life Council First-Year Harm Reduction Policy, often referred to as the “frat ban,” was lifted, allowing the Class of 2027 to enter Greek spaces on campus. The frat ban — initially set to end on the Monday following Homecoming weekend this year — was permanently extended to end at noon on the Wednesday after Homecoming weekend or the Wednesday after Halloween, whichever date comes later.

Rose Mutiso ’08 Th ’08 has been awarded the McGuire Family Prize for Societal Impact. She is the co-founder of The Mawazo Institute, a women-led African organization based in Kenya and dedicated to helping female researchers in their early careers, according to The Mawazo Institute’s website. She is also the research director for the Energy for Growth Hub, a global think tank working to end energy poverty and build a climate-resilient future, according to the Energy for Growth Hub website. The McGuire Prize “recognizes and awards Dartmouth community members who have contributed toward or are responsible for making a significant positive impact on humanity, society or the environment,” according to Dartmouth’s website.

On Aug. 22, Kenny Mok ’25 and Onyinyechi Owo ’25 were awarded the Obama-Chesky Voyager Scholarship for public service along with 98 other undergraduate students from across the country. The Voyager Scholarship, founded in 2022 by the Obama Foundation and Airbnb founder Brian Chesky, recognizes undergraduate sophomores “who can bridge divides” and help solve the world’s “biggest challenges,” according to the Voyager Scholarship’s website. Mok and Owo are the first Dartmouth students to ever win the award.

As fall foliage season nears, Dartmouth students and Hanover businesses are preparing for an increase in tourism over the next few weeks. Foliage is expected to peak in the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee region between Oct. 5 and Oct. 15, according to the New Hampshire Division of Travel and Tourism’s website. As of Sept. 27, only 10 to 15% of the leaves have changed color, though more colors are expected to arrive in the coming weeks.
