While Dartmouth students have likely written more essays than they can count, many might have trouble remembering the last time they wrote for pleasure — to craft a story just for themselves. I personally love to write poetry but can never justify pausing in the middle of a problem set to pull out my journal. Making time for creative writing can be difficult at Dartmouth. As a result, some students find that joining writing-based clubs in college gives them a dedicated space for their passion.

It can be tempting to escape Hanover at times — to flee a difficult midterm, a messy breakup or the prospect of spending another Friday night in the same sticky fraternity basement. Yet Dartmouth’s rural location means that it can take several hours to travel to a larger town or city. Though there are options for leaving Hanover — such as riding the Dartmouth Coach to Boston or New York or renting a ZipCar — these can be costly or inconvenient. If those options don’t work, students can be left feeling trapped in the “Dartmouth bubble.”

This week is Eating Disorder Awareness Week — an annual campaign aimed at educating people about eating disorders and offering support for those affected by them. Dartmouth Dining registered dietician and nutritionist Beth Rosenberger has worked at Dartmouth for over 25 years and helps students with dietary restrictions or food-related health issues navigate the dining halls.

Networking consists of establishing relationships with those who might introduce you to potential employers, send opportunities your way or simply just remember your name.

You might be familiar with stories about people waiting in line to get the newest Stanley tumbler, or spending hours stuck in Ticketmaster’s digital queue for Taylor Swift tickets. Comparatively, having to wait for a treadmill at the gym to free up might seem strange. Nevertheless, Zimmerman Fitness Center has been filled with students since this winter term began.

Dartmouth students pursue a wide range of paths after they graduate: starting a job, pursuing a graduate degree, entering the armed forces or a combination of infinite other paths. However, a number of students reject all traditional notions of a typical early career path by choosing a different option: a “gap year” after college.

The time has come when days get shorter and daylight becomes scarce. Unsurprisingly, these changes in our environments can drastically affect our mood. While it may be easy to succumb to gloominess and stay cooped up all the time, there are better ways to combat feeling down.

Many Dartmouth students rarely interact with their professors outside of a classroom context. They might attend the occasional office hour or stop to chat after a lecture, but it isn’t often that they have the opportunity to truly get to know their professors. At Dartmouth, however, students have the opportunity to grab a meal with a professor of their choice through the Take Your Professor to Lunch program run by the Undergraduate Dean’s office.

Glancing across a Dartmouth classroom, it can be hard not to notice the different ways students take notes. Some hands, with pen or pencil in hand, rapidly fly across a sheet of paper, while others quickly type on a keyboard. However a student takes notes, it is clear that note-taking is a central component of college life and essential to a student’s understanding of class material. Nonetheless, the introduction of new technology in the past few decades has drastically changed how students take notes. According to a survey of graduate students at the University of North Carolina, 63% of students now use digital technology in the classroom. But which method is the most effective? And beyond that, how much should you write, and when should you study your notes?

Whether you’re partaking to rejuvenate your mind or strengthen your body, yoga has something for everyone. According to the American Osteopathic Association, yoga offers an extensive list of the physical and mental benefits, which range from increased flexibility to better cardiovascular health to improved mental health. Luckily, the Dartmouth community can try their hand at yoga both on and off campus. Two popular options are Mighty Yoga, which offers classes in the Town of Hanover, and the Student Wellness Center, which hosts free yoga sessions right on campus.
