The friendly confines of Thompson Arena will be a welcome sight to the men's hockey squad this weekend when they take the ice this weekend. The hostile rinks of upstate New York were not kind to the Big Green as they fell to Cornell and Colgate, dealing a big blow to their playoff hopes.

Lake Placid, N.Y. " Dartmouth has been a dominant team in overtime games this season, posting a 4-0-4 record entering yesterday's game with Harvard. Memorable extra-time wins over Maine, Merrimack and more recently, Vermont, have been some of the highlights of this successful season for the Big Green squad.

Sometimes you need to be slapped around a bit before you wake up. Apparently Dartmouth men's hockey needed that against Rensselaer Friday night, as the Big Green spotted the Engineers an early 2-0 lead, before countering with four unanswered goals to take the first game in of the best-of-three series with RPI.

After last year's impressive NCAA campaign, almost anything would be a letdown for the Dartmouth women's lacrosse, who is ranked 11 in the preseason IWLCA. Despite the loss of some effective offensive firepower due to graduation, the Big Green is cautiously avoiding any such signs of weakness.

All season long there have been nights when a bounce here and a bounce there have meant the difference between a win and a loss for Dartmouth men's hockey. Most of these losses have come on the road, where the Big Green has a 2-6-2 record.

In my daily perusal of the online sports media yesterday, I came across some sad, sad news. Much to my surprise and dismay, I read that defenseman Ulf Samuelsson, a 16-year veteran of the league, is retiring. It seems that no team was willing to take a risk on the hard-hitting defenseman. After reading this, I sat back and thought to myself, "Good riddance."

With no Psi U keg jump on the schedule for Winter Carnival, you may think the only athletic pursuits taking place this weekend will involve modified ping pong paddles or a pair of die. However, if you think this you are sorely mistaken, my friend. From the ice of Thompson Arena, to the hardwood of Leede Arena to the slopes of the Dartmouth Skiway, the Big Green will be in action this weekend.

This is a great country. Its greatness exists on so many levels, but I will concentrate on one aspect in today's column -- sports television. Yes, that is right, the savior of all those sports nuts like myself, who not only enjoy procrastination, but also live for the excitement and emotion that is sports on TV.
