As a working artist, Ed Smith, this term's Artist-in-Residence, is keenly aware of the stereotypes that surround his profession. In a world where success can often be subjective or arbitrary, fluctuating with the ebb and flow of cultural trends, Smith takes pride in what he calls "a working man's job."
Over the summer, Alexa Burneikis '98 got to fulfill her childhood fantasy: she visited the island of Bali. "I found Bali in a book somewhere when I was a kid," she said. Ever since, she has been enchanted with the island's tropical landscape and cultural treasures. When a real opportunity to visit Bali presented itself in the form of the Goodman Fund, a College anthropology grant, she jumped at the chance and won funding for her travel.
Every rock guitarist from Eric Clapton to Jimmy Page to Duane Allman has tried his hand at the blues, with varying degrees of success. For the most part, however, these guitar giants have lacked the "soul" that is intrinsic to the blues. Of course, these men were innovators in rock, but the blues is a different genre.

It's easy to be intimidated when you peer into the jewelry or woodworking shops downstairs at the Hopkins Center. You press up against the glass and see machines humming, people working intently at their projects, instructors reviewing students' plans or drawings.
