As the clock crept towards 1 a.m. on a Wednesday night midway through spring term, a lone figure remained seated, leaned forward in his chair, captivated by his laptop computer. That figure was Eduvie Ikoba ’19, the freshman forward who helped Dartmouth clinch its second Ivy League title that sent them to the NCAA Tournament. On the screen, Major League Soccer forwards dribble through defenders, rocket shots past goaltenders and emulate the tiki-taka style made famous by FC Barcelona.

It is not typical for a freshman to come in and play a major role in a team’s success, but that’s exactly what John Lazor ’19 has been doing since he stepped on campus in the fall. In the spring, he surpassed a strong fall season that saw him create a young 1-2 punch with teammate Ian Kelsey ’18.

A little more than two weeks ago, Jordan Spieth was running away with the lead at the Masters. The 22-year-old phenom had just finished out the ninth hole at Augusta National with his fourth straight birdie, vaulting him five shots ahead of the field with just nine holes to play. The reigning Masters champion, the youngest to win the tournament since Tiger Woods, looked primed to fill the massive void left by Wood’s descent.

The Dartmouth men’s and women’s golf teams are entering into the full swing of their spring seasons, hoping to build on their strong fall seasons and continue on the path to respect and relevance in the world of Division 1 golf.

The next week will be a big one for Big Green track and field and ski teams, as both teams head to the NCAA championship races hunting for strong results. The Big Green track and field team is closing one its top seasons historically after the men’s best finish in the five years at Ivy League’s Indoor Heptagonal Championship. On the slopes, the Big Green Ski team will head to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, where the University of Colorado will host the NCAA Skiing Championship.

In an up-and-down weekend, the Dartmouth ski team surged to an early lead with wins in men’s and women’s slalom on day one of racing before eventually dropping into a second place finish at the Middlebury Carnival. In the final carnival of the season that also served as the NCAA Regionals, the Big Green was unable to hold off University of Vermont but feels ready for the NCAA Championships that are next on its schedule.

The men’s and women’s alpine teams finished the Williams Carnival with arguably their best performances of the season, grabbing six podium spots. The Nordic team grabbed two spots — both by Fabian Stocek ’17. The Big Green cruised to a second place overall finish. Although the University of Vermont staved off the Big Green alpine and Nordic teams’ efforts to unseat its top spot at this and past carnivals, the Big Green managed to finish in a close second in the overall points, 992-919.

The Big Green used a strong, late showing at the Dartmouth Carnival to push past the University of New Hampshire and secure a second place finish behind the University of Vermont at last weekend’s 106th Dartmouth Winter Carnival. Dartmouth recorded team wins in the men’s slalom and in the women’s 15K Classic.

The Big Green ski team continued its hot streak, beating out their host University of Vermont to capture a win at the two-weekend UVM Carnival event. The team continued its consistency across disciplines and was bolstered by the return of 2015 NCAA Freestyle champion Patrick Caldwell ’17 along with another strong freshman performance. The team, held from a first place finish in carnival season over the past three years, has now netted back to back first place finishes in their last two carnivals.

The Big Green ski team earned its first carnival win of the season — the first in almost four years — this past weekend in nail-biting fashion, edging out the University of Vermont and the University of New Hampshire to capture the Colby Carnival at Quarry Road Trails in Waterville, Maine. Dartmouth bested Vermont by four points to break the Catamounts streak of 20 straight carnival wins.

After opening the season with good results in Nordic U.S. Nationals over the first week of classes, the Dartmouth Nordic ski team heads to Sunday River, Maine this weekend to participate in the Bates Carnival. It will be the team’s first tournament of the season against its Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association foes.

Dartmouth men’s hockey kept rolling this weekend (6-8-1), ending the College of the Holy Cross’s (12-7-1) nine-game unbeaten streak, the longest in the NCAA this season. Dartmouth defeated the Crusaders in a 5-2 rout on Sunday after falling in a close 0-1 game against the University of Vermont (9-12-2) the day before.

After opening the season with two early losses, Dartmouth men’s basketball earned a 4-5 record over the winter interim to move its current status to 4-7 on the season. Playing all non-conference matchups, the Big Green notched wins over Long Island University Brooklyn, the University of Hartford, the University of Maine and Longwood University, but fell to the University of Vermont, Stanford University, California State University, Bakersfield, the University of New Hampshire and Bryant University.

With basketball season getting underway, The Dartmouth sat down with men’s basketball head coach Paul Cormier to get a look at how this year’s team will look to build on last season’s performance. The Big Green (0-1,0-0 Ivy) ended last season on a strong finish, recording a 7-7 record in conference play and earning a postseason bid for the first time in 56 years. They played in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament, where they fell in the first round to Canisius College. The preseason media poll picked the Big Green to finish sixth in the conference, but with a strong freshman class and several experienced seniors, the team looks primed to turn some heads in the Ivy League.

In its season finale this past weekend, the women’s soccer team notched its first win in Ivy League play, defeating Cornell University 1-0 at Burnham Field. On a brisk Saturday afternoon, the Big Green (8-4-4, 1-3-3 Ivy) put together a complete performance that the team struggled to find early in this season’s conference play, controlling the pace and possession of the game from the outset and generating chances early and often. A goal scored by Lucielle Kozlov ’16 in the 60th minute was all the Big Green needed to grab a win over Cornell (9-4-4, 2-4-1 Ivy) and move ahead of Yale University to finish seventh in the Ivy League standings.

The women’s soccer team remained winless in Ivy League play after the team fell at home to Columbia University 2-1 on Saturday. After a sluggish start to the match led to two quick Columbia goals in the first 28 minutes, the Big Green (7-4-3, 0-3-2 Ivy) were unable to mount a complete comeback despite rallying with strong play throughout the second half. The team has struggled to start games well, and as a result has been unable to find enough time to recover after falling into early deficits.
