Nivarthy: The Supreme Court Is Right to Scrutinize Student Loan Forgiveness

Last week, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in two cases that challenge President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan. President Biden’s plan, introduced by executive order in August 2022, eliminates $10,000 in loan debt for most borrowers and up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients. The plan also caps the income eligibility of those receiving loan forgiveness at $125,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples.

Nivarthy: In Defense of Standardized Testing

Standardized tests have become a punching bag for those seeking to address the socioeconomic gap in college admissions. Accelerated by the pandemic, the movement to abolish standardized tests like the SAT and ACT as an admissions factor has long been motivated by studies indicating that test scores are positively correlated with affluence and race. While narrowing these gaps are indeed worthy goals, opponents of standardized testing must consider the alternatives. In doing away with testing as an admissions criteria, we not only lose a quantitative, meritocratic tool in measuring aptitude, but we also end up elevating alternative measures that run a much higher risk of favoring the wealthy. Factors contributing to test performance — like test preparation resources, for instance — can be made more accessible, but testing itself remains a tool that rewards effort and achievement.

Nivarthy: Don’t Cancel Student Debt

As the cost of higher education remains an economic burden on young Americans and their families, progressive Democrats are ramping up calls for various levels of loan forgiveness. One of the most comprehensive proposals is that of Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who, along with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has called for up to $50,000 in loan forgiveness, in addition to making public college free of cost. Though President Joe Biden has so far only endorsed up to $10,000 in loan cancellation, concerns about waning support among young voters have increased his attentiveness towards more expansive relief.

Nivarthy: Tax University Endowments

Prestigious universities, such as Dartmouth and its peer institutions, have grown too comfortable with hoarding their billions in endowments as a status symbol, preventing students from benefiting from even the fraction it would take to improve campus facilities and programs. Just last year, the College boasted a 46.5% year-over-year return on its endowment, and instituted a few limited financial changes, including increasing student workers’ hourly minimum wage by $3.75 and eliminating an expected parent contribution in financial aid calculations. While these changes are commendable, institutions like Dartmouth continue to withhold funds from being used more directly for improving the academic and personal lives of their students. It’s past time for the federal government to step in with a stick and tax college endowments.
