When the Ivy League released its 2015 Football Preseason Media Poll on Aug. 11, the Big Green found itself in an unfamiliar place — second on the list. A ranking this high has not been granted to the Big Green since 1996 when they were rated top of the League and eventually went on to win it all. Despite this new ascension to the upper echelon of Ivy rankings, the Dartmouth football team believes that it is destined for even greater heights.

Though Dartmouth women’s rugby co-captain Yejadai Dunn ’16 is spending the summer working in Boston, she has not taken a break from playing the sport she loves. In addition to being a member of the Boston’s women’s club rugby team, Beantown, Dunn was selected to the ATAVUS All-Stars Women’s Collegiate 15s team to play against Ontario in late July and is now at USA Rugby’s National All-Star Competition camp in Denver.

Hunter Johnstone ’16 is the co-captain of the Dartmouth sailing team. Just last month, Johnstone was selected for the Intercollegiate Sailing Association 2015 All-Academic Team.

Three members of the women’s golf team, Jane Lee ’15, Lily Morrison ’16 and Jessica Kittelberger ’18, were named to the Collegiate Golf All-American Scholar team. The team, which is compiled by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association, recognizes athletes who perform at a high level both on the course and in the classroom. To be eligible for recognition, golfers must compete in at least 50 percent of the tournaments, have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 and be in good standing with the College.

Dartmouth’s three crew teams competed in the three-mile Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie over the weekend, with the men’s lightweight first varsity eight finishing sixth. After a disappointing outing at the Head of the Charles earlier this month, the women’s first eight rebounded with a better finish, coming in 13th of 50 boats.

The crew teams will travel to Cambridge, Massachusetts, this weekend for the 50th Head of the Charles Regatta — the largest two-day race of its kind, attracting entrants and spectators from across the globe. Thanks to its top-20 finish last year, the women’s crew team will send two boats to the race for the first time, a championship eight and a club eight.

After wrapping up its best season in history last spring with a 10th-place finish at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championship, Dartmouth equestrian looks forward to starting its 2014-15 campaign this weekend. The team is rushing into the new season with two shows, one Saturday at the University of Vermont and a second Sunday at Middlebury College.

A nine-goal offensive explosion lifted the field hockey team above Brown University and Bryant University this weekend, its first two wins of the year. The Big Green (2-5, 1-1 Ivy) dominated Brown 6-1 Saturday, then edged out Bryant 3-2 in overtime on Sunday. Dartmouth’s offensive performance marked a great improvement for the team, and suggests that their early season woes might be over. The weekend ended a two-game goalless streak and a five-game losing streak.

When Sofia Roman ’16 started playing basketball in the third grade, she just wanted to be good enough to compete with her older sister. Now Roman, who was born in the Philippines, is good enough to play for her country. Just this past June, Roman traveled to Manila to try out for Discovery Perlas Philippine Women’s Basketball team, where, after 10 days of training, she was told she made the national squad.

The volleyball team had a successful weekend at the Jack Kaiser Tournament in Queens, New York, where it placed third out of five teams after two hard-fought wins on Saturday afternoon to earn a 3-1 tournament record. The Big Green (6-1, 0-0 Ivy) won three matches in five sets, going the distance to defeat St. John’s University, St. Francis College in Brooklyn and the University of New Hampshire. The Big Green’s lone setback of the tournament — and the season so far — came in three sets at the hands of Fresno State University.

The Dartmouth men’s heavyweight crew team traveled to Worcester, Massachusetts, last weekend for the Eastern Sprints Regatta, where the Big Green finished 14th overall out of the pool of 18 crews for the Rowe Cup. First varsity eight took 12th place, while the second, third and fourth varsity eights all came in ninth in their divisions.

In one of its tightest races this year, the men’s heavyweight crew team took home three races and the Packard Cup from No. 18 Syracuse University at home on Friday. The first, third and fourth varsity eight boats captured close victories, while the second boat lost by less than half of a second to the Orange.

In a weekend that included inclement weather, tough conditions and location changes, the men’s and women’s crew teams saw mixed results. The women’s crew team competed in a two-day Clemson Invitational, faring better on the second day. The men’s lightweight team failed to win a race as it struggled against Yale University in the Durand Cup and Columbia University in the Subin Cup. The men’s heavyweight team fell to Boston University and beat Rutgers University.

Dartmouth’s crew teams opened their spring race seasons this Saturday away from Hanover, with the women’s number one boat taking first place. The women drove to Boston to face University of Minnesota and Rutgers University, the men’s lightweight team trekked to Princeton, N.J. where it took on the University of Delaware and the men’s heavyweight team traveled to Overpeck Park, N.J. to compete against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the College of the Holy Cross and Columbia University in the Alumni Cup.

The women’s ice hockey team had its playoff season cut short after dropping the first round best-of-three series to No. 3 Clarkson University this past weekend. The Big Green (9-20-1, 8-13-1 ECAC) lost to the Golden Knights (27-4-5, 16-2-4 ECAC) 2-0 both Friday and Saturday afternoon. In each game, the offense failed to mobilize, managing only 31 shots on the weekend to 70 by the Golden Knights.

With two wins this weekend, Dartmouth women’s hockey clinched its fifth straight appearance at the ECAC Hockey Tournament. The Big Green (9-18-1, 8-13-1 ECAC) shut out Brown University 3-0 Friday night before traveling to Yale University and beating the Bulldogs 2-1.

The women’s hockey team ended its home season on a sour note, falling to St. Lawrence University on Friday night 4-1 and No. 5 Clarkson University 6-1 on Saturday night. Despite the disappointing finishes, the women remain in the running for the playoffs and in ninth place in the ECAC, thanks to Colgate University and No. 3 Cornell University’s wins over eighth-place Rensselaer Polytechnic Insitute.

The women’s hockey team plays its last two home games of the year this weekend, facing St. Lawrence University on Friday and No. 5 Clarkson University on Saturday. Earlier this season, the women (7-16-1, 6-11-1 ECAC) fell 3-0 to Clarkson (21-4-5, 12-2-4 ECAC) and 4-1 to St. Lawrence (10-16-3, 9-6-3) on the road.

In a game that was far closer than the score indicated, the women’s hockey team fell to No. 5 Harvard University 4-1 at Thompson Arena on Friday. The Dartmouth women (7-16-1, 6-11-1 ECAC) were doomed by an 0-5 night on the power play and an inability to beat Harvard sophomore Emerance Maschmeyer despite outshooting the Crimson (18-3-3, 14-2-2 ECAC) for the second time this season.
