Junior spring. Here one minute, gone the next. In this whirlwind of a term that lacked a bit in the activism department from last term, but made up for it in the rain department, I had nearly forgotten that some of my best friends are leaving this place in only a few short weeks.

What is tradition? Webster's dictionary defines tradition in part as "a long-established custom or practice that has the effect of an unwritten law." Apparently, Dartmouth defines the same term as "an aversion to change."

Tired of insensitive and uninformed editorials about self-segregation? Instead, let's discuss something we can all understand. Something warm and fuzzy, something tangible that the Dartmouth community can really get their grips around.

Staring wholly uninspired at a blank Microsoft Word screen is a writer's most dreaded nightmare. After spending seven months away from Planet Dartmouth, how could I have absolutely nothing to say?

I always liked those posters that read, "All I ever needed to know about life I learned..." Please insert poster of your choice here: from my cat, in kindergarten, etc. But after spending Winter term working in New York City, I now understand that those posters were frauds, and the messages they espoused were deceptive lies.

Mouth agape and stomach churning, my ears were assaulted with the racism and sexism that unfolded in the tale of Beta Theta Pi "Brother X."

Ineighth grade, I had a pen-pal. Her name was Tatjana and she lived in Zagreb, Croatia. Although she was a couple of years older than me, we wrote fairly regularly for a year or so. She had a mother and a father; she had a steady boyfriend with whom she was very much in love; she took piano lessons.

Onceupon a sultry South Carolina summer morning, two 11-year-old girls decided to build a fort. One collected wood from her father's garage, and the two then proudly built what they thought was the biggest and best fort their side of the Mason-Dixon line.

Webster's Dictionary first defines silence as "the state or fact of keeping silent; a refraining from speech or from making noise." The fifth and final definition of silence, however, leaps out of the newsprint page, screaming to be recognized: "oblivion or obscurity."

Whilecanoeing down the river this past weekend, the hot sun burning my exposed shoulders, I discovered yet another form of resilience exhibited by Dartmouth students.

TheReligious Right is at it again. While Iwas searching for a topic to write about, I literally tripped over one. An article on the front page of the May 16 New York Times caught my attention: "The Religious Right Readies Agenda for Second 100 Days."

Sundaywas a picture perfect day for the Boston Walk for Hunger. It was a bit windy, but sunny and a lot warmer than New Hampshire. Despite the wind, those of us who walked learned some important lessons on the value of random acts of kindness.

Asmany of you know, the annual Take Back the Night March was held this past Thursday. The march itself was as empowering as I expected, and possibly even more so. But the vigil in honor of sexual assault which took place afterwards was truly extraordinary. Not only was this candlelight ceremony unprecedented at Dartmouth, but it was the first time I, personally, had ever experienced something so touching and so powerful that I was moved to tears on several occasions.

Inlight of the recent discussion concerning Playboy's impending visit, a few issues need to be emphasized. That Playboy has every right to come to Dartmouth is a given. That women on this campus have every right to choose to pose for Playboy is likewise a given. This is not where we should focus our valuable time and energy. Instead, we should consider the implications Playboy's visit will have for the Dartmouth community.

During spring break, I ran into an old historyteacher with whom I was friends in high school. He was anxious to hear how I had been enjoying the past year-and-a-half of Ivy League enlightenment. We talked for some time before the inevitable question arose: "Now let me ask you... Do you love Dartmouth?"

A day or two ago I casually opened my J. Crew catalogue addressed to the Student at Dartmouth College, expecting a peek at the new spring fashions. To my horror, instead of being modeled by women, the neat tissue crepe suits and silk outfits were draped over hangers. Surely this could not be.
