The College's "Sophomore Program," the brainchild of the Upperclass Deans office, the Dean of the Faculty office and the Office of Residential Life, seeks to provide advising targeted to sophomores but has seen less-than-overwhelming interest and attendance so far.

Biology professor Celia Chen and environmental consultant Kathy Fallon-Lambert '90 contributed to two studies that have been used by Congress to push for tougher environmental restrictions for mercury emission levels. The studies found that several hotspots dot the Northeast coast where elevated mercury concentrations are linked to atmospheric mercury, a toxic chemical entering the air from surrounding coal fire plants.

The College celebrated the opening of Kemeny Hall and the Haldeman Center with two dedication ceremonies and tours of the new buildings this weekend. Their completion marks the end of a two-year long construction period.

The Brain Imaging Center hosted a day-long event Thursday highlighting the use of neuroimaging equipment at Dartmouth in faculty and graduate student research. The event, which kicked off a series of presentations on the subject, included talks by Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center professionals and Dartmouth professors as well as posters detailing different aspects of graduate-level research.

Recent changes in federal aid have placed a heavier financial strain on such students.

Edward Van Dyk threw his two sons, aged four and eight, and himself off a 15-story balcony of the Loews Miami Beach Hotel Sunday morning. Van Dyk, a 43-year-old oncologist from Illinois, worked his first position as radiation oncology specialist at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Chancellor Gordon Brown's appointment of Dartmouth economics professor David Blanchflower to the Monetary Policy Committee at the Bank of England has since come under attack from the Committee and the Bank's governing court. The Guardian Unlimited, a British newspaper, reports one source saying that "it had been the worst received nomination in the MPC's nine-year history."

All-DOC Day, an annual event sponsored by the Dartmouth Outing Club will be hosted this Thursday, May 19th from 3-6 p.m. outside of Mass Row. The event will include a free barbecue and demonstrations of various activities. Planned activities include "kayaking" down the steps of Massachusetts Hall, performances of the Salty Dog Rag and bicycle repair demonstrations. Members of the forestry team and Dartmouth Mountaineering Club will also showcase at the event.

Jessica Spradling '06 rose above five contestants last Saturday to win the 83rd Katherine Irene Glascock Intercollegiate Poetry Competition at Mount Holyoke College. Spradling, an English major, is the first Dartmouth student to win the contest, which is the oldest intercollegiate poetry competition.

The approximately 14,000 square-foot fitness center houses 64 cardio machines, new dumbbells, free weight stations and 42 circuit machines, among various other physical-fitness training equipment. It also contains new features such as a spinning room, televisions for over half of the cardio machines, a library of workout videos, and anatomy and training books.

"The financial aid process is a very frustrating process for me," Agatha Erickson '09 said. "There was so much paperwork and hoops you have to jump through just to get a little bit of help. Dartmouth likes to brag about how much money they give away every year in aid, but they really make this aid hard to get."

Elizabeth Kolbert, author of the new book "Field Notes From a Catastrophe," spoke to undergraduates, faculty and community members in a packed Filene Auditorium on Tuesday evening. Brought in as part of the George Links Jr. Environmental Awareness Lecture series, Kolbert criticized the Bush administration, explained the difficulty the media has in discussing global warming and used statistics and case studies to illustrate the radical effects of global warming.

Currently in its second year, the ICC aims to raise awareness about diversity at Dartmouth. It is composed mostly of student representatives from the campus's minority student groups, including the Pan-Asian Council and the Gay Straight Alliance.
