Dartmouth's sensational response to the crisis in Haiti led by Students at Dartmouth for Haiti Relief, has exceeded all expectations. SDHR has already surpassed the initial fundraising goal of $100,000. Most of the monetary donations solicited by SDHR and various other campus organizations have been directed to Partners in Health, a charitable organization co-founded by College President Jim Yong Kim. Recently, Kim sent e-mails to the parents of all Dartmouth students, asking if they might consider a donation to Partners in Health. This decision has left some questioning Kim's lack of subtlety in promoting an organization to which he has such close ties. Parents already contribute a formidable amount to the College financially, so was Kim's appeal for more money justified?

Over the last decade, the general consensus among food scientists and left-wing politicians has been that the American food industry has run amuck with unhealthy, non-sustainable products. Local and national government, bucking free-market economics, have immersed themselves in the politics of what should go on our plates. For example, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has already banned trans fats in Big Apple restaurants, wants to limit salt content in prepared foods by 25 percent. Other left-leaning states have launched similar campaigns to regulate what citizens are eating.

Discussion in France is a contact sport. I spent my spring break in Paris, staying with my French cousin, who is a student at the equivalent of a graduate business school. A few nights into my visit we celebrated the birthday of one of his classmates -- five of us packed around a table for a little fromage and discussion. Before long, there was a palpable tension in the room, as the E.U., the death of optimism among the French youth, and Franco-American relations all came under the scrutiny of the present Parisians.

P resident Obama, one month into his presidency, finds himself torn between two opposing forces. During the campaign, he vowed to rid Washington of partisan strife, but now he must resort to one-party politics to revive the American economy. Instead of trying to woo Republicans to his side of the policy debate, Obama should focus on helping those people who have lost their jobs or have seen the value of their retirement accounts plummet. If that means abandoning his hopes of bipartisanship, so be it. This country has too much to lose if decisive action on the economy is not taken immediately.
