To the Class of 2024,
For plenty of students, myself included, movies and TV shows are a great escape from the endless quest for maximum productivity. The 30 to 60 minutes before I go to sleep each night are spent watching some sitcom or another, breaking up my busy days in the name of relaxation and self-care.
Standing tall behind Dartmouth Hall is a row of three brick buildings that serve as South House freshman year housing — the Fayerweather residence halls. Colloquially known as North Faye, Mid Faye and South Faye, the trio of buildings have long been a cornerstone of first-year bonding at Dartmouth, fostering a sense of community that transcends their physical structure. Although these buildings are not connected above ground, they are linked through a shared basement — commonly referred to as the “Fayesment” — which facilitates interaction between residents of different buildings. More than just living spaces, the Fayes have become synonymous with tight-knit connections and shared experiences among first-year residents.
CRWT 40.15, “Tell Me A Story: Introduction to Nonfiction Radio and Podcasting,” offers students the opportunity to learn the foundational skills of audio storytelling and production. Lecturer Sophie Crane, a producer at Pushkin Industries and former investigative reporter at Frontline and other public radio stations, teaches the class and cited the uniqueness of audio storytelling as a draw of the class.
Weekly, hundreds of students crowd Greek house basements to hang out with friends, play games of pong, and dance. The sticky floors and crushed Keystone cans are classic staples of fraternity life. For most visitors to a frat house, the cleanliness of the floor is the least of their worries. But some of us may wonder: Just how dirty are frat floors?
Every Thursday, a combination of around fifty Dartmouth students and Upper Valley community members assemble in Sudikoff Hall to celebrate the joy of gospel music. They are members of the Dartmouth Gospel Choir, a Hopkins Center ensemble which performs gospel — a genre of music grounded in the Christian faith that combines hymn-like melodies with spiritual expression. The group is open to both Dartmouth students and the greater Upper Valley community.
Dartmouth Dining has installed cameras in unspecified dining locations within the past few weeks in response to concerns that students are stealing food, according to an email statement from Dartmouth Dining director Jon Plodzik. The change comes after Dartmouth Dining reintroduced pre-COVID policies at The Class of 1953 Commons at the beginning of fall term, including holding student IDs at the entryway if they are getting food to-go through the Green2Go program.
Dartmouth students are busy people. To be a student is to balance a wide variety of obligations on campus: classes, sports, clubs, performance groups and sometimes more. For many students, working a job is another obligation to juggle. The Dartmouth spoke with students about where they work and how they found jobs that fit their interests and busy schedules.
Picture this: It’s the first day of classes. Nervously seated among strangers, you grab your notebook and computer in preparation for the lecture. You glance around the room, when suddenly, you get the feeling that someone is watching you. You turn your head, making eye contact with the person next to you. You notice their red hair, similar in hue to your own. As you take in your shared ginger-ness, you are confronted with a peculiar question:

On Oct. 12, the Phi Beta Kappa honor society inducted twenty members of the Class of 2024, honoring students who have achieved grade point averages that fall within the top 20 in their class after completing eight terms at Dartmouth within three years of matriculation. The ceremony also awarded the annual Phi Beta Kappa Sophomore Prize to members of the Class of 2025 who achieved the highest academic ranking after completing five terms, no later than two years after matriculation.
When the clock strikes 11 during an on-night, mobs of freshmen fill the streets of Dartmouth’s campus. Instead of heading to tails or to play pong in a fraternity basement, they flock to the Choates or the Fayesment. Even during the era of the frat ban, Dartmouth students still find a way to party.
