In September, following stints as general manager for the New York Mets from 2010 until 2018 and as senior advisor of baseball operations to Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane in 2019, Sandy Alderson ’69 stepped into the role of Mets team president. Alderson, who has worked in Major League Baseball since 1981, sat down with The Dartmouth to discuss his time at the College, his experience as a journalist and marine in Vietnam, his career in baseball and more.

Grace Scott ’22 comes to Dartmouth with more than 10 years of climbing and bouldering experience and a long history of success in both. Scott, a Rhode Island native, has been to the Bouldering Youth National Championships eight times and has rock climbed competitively throughout that time frame as well. Recently, she began trying winter climbing, including ice climbing and mountaineering and climbed Mount Rainier, the 17th-tallest mountain in the United States and the tallest mountain in Washington State. She spent her past summer in New Hampshire as a climbing guide.

Staci Mannella ’18 is a member of the U.S. Paralympian team that will be competing in Pyeongchang, South Korea beginning on March 9. Mannella suffers from achromatopsia, which causes partial blindness and sensitivity to light. In 2014, Mannella finished sixth in slalom and giant slalom at the Sochi Paralympic Games. Last year, she earned her first podium at the World Championships with a bronze medal finish in the super combined. In addition to skiing, Mannella is a member of the Dartmouth equestrian team.

Originally from Laval, Québec where he attended Académie Sainte-Thérèse, Dan Martin ’21, is currently playing No. 2 singles for men’s tennis. Despite dropping two matchups last week, the Big Green is competing at a historic level this season, beginning the 2017-2018 season 12-0, its best start in program history. Dartmouth is currently ranked No. 19 in the country, though it previously held the No. 14 spot in mid-February, which was also a program record. Martin, who is currently No. 101 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Division I men’s national singles rankings, has played an important role on the team all season. In a 5-2 victory over the University of Minnesota on Feb. 9, Martin beat then-No. 34 Stefan Milicevic. Before Dartmouth, Martin finished second at the U16 Canadian Championship and third at the U18 Canadian Championship.

Miles Wright ’18, co-captain of the men’s basketball team, scored his 1,000th career point against Cornell University this past Friday, making him the 29th Dartmouth player to reach the milestone. Wright, a Boston native and a sociology modified with African and African American Studies major, averages 12.1 points per game, putting him at 14th place in the Ivy League and second at Dartmouth.

Isalys “Ice” Quiñones ’19 has been a consistent leader for the Big Green as one of only three players to average double digits each game; she records 10.1 points per game. This past summer, Quiñones earned a spot on the Puerto Rican Women’s National Team and had the opportunity to play in the Women’s Centrobasket Championship in the Virgin Islands and the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup in Argentina. Puerto Rico ultimately finished third in both tournaments, which qualified the team for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup this upcoming fall.

Women’s tennis co-captain Kristina Mathis ’18 has been playing tennis since she was five thanks to the influence of her dad. Here at Dartmouth, she has seen her team through many victories including winning the Ivy League Championship last spring. The women’s tennis team most recently won on Wednesday, January 17 against Boston University.

Fresh off of a 10th-place finish at the Boston College Coast-to-Coast Battle at Beantown at Franklin Park in Boston, Massachusetts last Friday, Olivia Lantz ’19 is off to a great start this season. Lantz completed the 5-kilometer course in 17:30 against a nationally competitive field, shaving 30 seconds from her time in the same race last year. With a win at the Maria Souther Sanchez Invitational earlier in the season at the Hanover Country Club, Lantz looks poised to contend with some of the best runners in the Ivy League and the country.

Following a senior campaign that included a 4:12.56 mile run that qualified for the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America competition as well as a team award for the greatest improvement throughout one’s college career, Connor Clark ’17 graduated from Dartmouth and headed west to join the University of Oregon’s cross-country team. After participating in the earth science domestic study abroad during his junior fall, Clark retained a semester’s worth of eligibility in NCAA, allowing him to compete as a redshirt senior. He joins a long line of Dartmouth cross-country athletes who have continued their college careers with the Ducks, including Matt Miner ’12, Alexi Pappas ’12, Will Geoghegan ’14 and Tim Gorman ’16.

Veteran journalist Bruce Wood has covered Upper Valley sports since 1979, first as a reporter for the Valley News, later in Dartmouth’s sports information office and since 2005 as the man behind the Big Green Alert blog. On his site, Wood details every Dartmouth football practice and game, publishing at least one full-length story daily from preseason to the final game. In January, Matt Burke ’98 was promoted to defensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins after serving as its linebackers coach in 2016. Burke, a walk-on safety with the Big Green, is entering his 14th year working in the National Football League after getting his big break from defensive guru Jim Schwartz in 2004. Now at the helm of the Dolphins defense, with six rookie defensive draft picks in the 2017 NFL Draft this past April, Burke is at a new peak in his career.

Matt Rube ’19, co-founder of the Dartmouth Climbing Club, was one of two climbers who represented the Big Green at the 2017 Collegiate National Rock Climbing Championships in San Diego, California. Rube advanced to the Speed Finals, finishing in sixth place, and helped secure Dartmouth’s ninth-place team finish.

Frankie Sands ’19, a recent transfer from Norwich University, has dominated the rugby scene, earning her top honors nationally. Most recently, she was named as one of four finalists for the Sorensen Award, given to the best collegiate women’s rugby player in the nation. While Sands has found success here at Dartmouth and throughout her career, her journey to rugby has been anything but conventional.

Jamie Susanin ’17, one of two seniors on the women’s golf team, has consistently led Dartmouth in scoring performance all season. Making a resurgence from a quiet junior year season, Susanin helped the Big Green secure a fifth-place tie at the Ivy League Championships with Brown University this past weekend.

Courtney Weisse ’17, an attacker on the women’s lacrosse team, leads the Big Green with 34 goals and 38 points this season. Weisse has scored at least one goal in every game this season and has scored five goals on three occasions, most recently on Saturday versus Cornell University.

At the Lynne Marchiando Trophy in Boston, Massachusetts last weekend, Rebecca McElvain ’19 helped the Big Green sailing team win its first conference team race in 15 years. McElvain, one of Dartmouth’s top crews, and teammate Charles Lalumiere ’17 swept the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association weekly awards.

The men’s lacrosse team has won just one game this season thus far, but its freshman goalkeeper George Christopher ’20 has been a relative bright spot. A touted prospect who played at Washington, D.C.’s Gonzaga College High School, Christopher was recruited by former Big Green coach Andy Towers but now plays under head coach Brendan Callahan, a fellow Gonzaga alumnus.

Bob Whalen officially entered his 28th campaign at the helm of Big Green baseball in late February when the team began its annual southern sojourn to escape the New England cold and kick off its season. During his tenure, the Big Green has taken home two Ivy titles, as well as 11 Red Rolfe Division crowns, and sent 26 players into professional baseball. This year’s team is looking to continue in that winning tradition.
