On the afternoon of Nov. 3, Collis Common Ground bustled with the energy of hungry Dartmouth Students; Cupcake Warz had arrived. Presented by Alpha Phi, the event featured over 1,000 cupcakes that students could sample for a $5 entrance fee.

Katie, William, Simon and Riley’s Lemon Zucchini Cupcakes

Why we loved it: Dubbed “The Palate Cleanser,” by those who made them, these cupcakes took the game to a whole new level. Light and tangy, they were a refreshing change in a room dominated by pumpkin spice and chocolate.

Why we loved it: These bakers went all out with their presentation. From the egg cartons to the hay peaking out under them, their cupcakes were egg-cellent.

Ivy’s Ginger Pear Cupcakes

Presentation: 4/5

Taste: 4/5

Why we loved it: We highly appreciated the bakers’ willingness to incorporate two divisive flavors into the cupcakes, and the result paid off. With a consistent, delectably spiced interior, they were the quintessential fall cupcakes.

Steve, Rachel, Brendan and James’ Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes

Presentation: 4/5

Taste: 5/5

Why we loved it: Though there were many takes on the pumpkin spice cupcake, these featured the best cream cheese frosting of the bunch. Generously smeared on, it was the perfect icing on top of a delicious pumpkin spice cake.

Laura, Kamran, Niki, and Kevin’s Choconut Cupcakes

Presentation: 5/5

Taste: 3.5/5

Why we loved it: This team of bakers did a great job of presenting their cupcakes in a fun way. Note the well-executed swirls resting on coconut-frosted tops, the creative title on the sign and — not pictured — the welcoming smiles of the bakers behind the table.

Alyssa and Victoria’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cupcakes

Presentation: 5/5

Taste: 3/5

Why we loved it: These bakers stepped up their game with their crowd-pleasing incorporation of everyone’s favorite vice: chocolate chip cookie dough. Unsurprisingly, this cupcake was more than the sum of its parts; it turns out that mixing two delicious foods can lead to something even greater.

Keaton and Ben’s Red Velvet Cupcakes

Presentation: 3/5

Taste: 5/5

Why we loved it: Though ostensibly a take on the classic red velvet cupcake, these were so much more. Perfectly executed, these cupcakes had us sneaking back for more samples at every chance.

Meghan, Rose and Shelley’s Apple Pie Cupcakes

Presentation: 5/5

Taste: 5/5

Why we loved it: These cupcakes managed to be at once classic and innovative, simple but perfect. They may very well have been our favorites of the bunch.

Iris and Lucy’s S’mores Cupcakes

Presentation: 5/5

Taste: 4/5

Why we loved it: Bringing the campfire staple to cupcake form, these bakers went all-out on the creativity front. They utilized a classic blend of flavors in an atypical way, and the result was a hit.

Andi and Annie’s Pumpkin Spice Cupcakes

Presentation: 3/5

Taste: 6/5

Why we loved it: Many attempted to perfect the pumpkin spice cupcake; these two, perhaps, did it best. With a moist interior and a wonderfully light frosting, the cupcake was simple, but perfect.
