D'Agostino advances to Nationals

D'Agostino's third place finish in her heat qualified her for the NCAA Nationals in Des Moine, Iowa, on June 8.

"I try to eliminate the whole idea of bigger competition and being up against nationally ranked runners because it would interfere with my confidence" D'Agostino said. "I try to treat it like an everyday race and any other 5K I've run. Running is a 90 percent mental effort, and I need to have the confidence to know that I am totally capable of doing this."

One of 18 League athletes to qualify for the NCAA competition, D'Agostino will be the only Big Green representative to race at Nationals.

"Abbey will do a lot of work by herself, and fitness coach Mark Coogan will give her workouts to do until she leaves [June 6]," Harwick said.

The Big Green had 14 athletes competing in both track and field events throughout the three-day Regional event and had one runner advance to the quarterfinal round. Head coach Barry Harwick said the athletes supported each other as much as possible throughout the weekend.

"It seemed like we had someone in the first event and someone in the last event every day," he said. "They all tried to see as many teammates compete as possible but with the scheduling of a track meet it was impossible for everyone to see everything."

Alex Tanner '11 had the 14th fastest seed time in the 400-meter hurdles, and her 58.84 finish qualified her for the quarterfinals race. In the quarterfinals, Tanner finished 14th, but her time of 59.31 was over a second off from the qualifying standard for Nationals.

Arianna Vailas '14 finished 31st in the 1,500-meter run. Because her finish was not in the top five of her heat or among the other four fastest times, Vailas did not advance.

Chrissy Supino '12 took seventh in her heat in the 800-meter run and crossed the finish line in 2:11.84. Supino missed qualifying for the quarterfinals by 2.5 seconds.

Caitie Meyer '14 ran the 10,000-meter in 34:03.21, the 17th fastest time in the race and 30 seconds faster than her seeded time. Meyer broke the Dartmouth school record, but the last runner to advance to Nationals finished seven seconds before her.

Alexi Pappas '12 ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:27.53, 10 seconds away from the qualifying standard.

Tom Robbins '12 missed qualifying for the quarterfinals by less than half of a second in the 1,500-meters. Robbins ran the race in 3:50.99.

Ethan Shaw '12 added 20 seconds to his seeded time in the 10,000-meter and took 24th place with a 29:55.07 time. Shaw finished 24th and was 30 seconds off from finishing in the advancing positions.

Phil Royer '13 ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:07.9, earning 32nd place.

Various field athletes also performed well over the weekend. Jaclyn Wypler '11 competed in the javelin throw and finished 40th overall. Malina Summers '11 finished 10th in her group and 40th overall in the triple jump. Summers jumped a height of 11.99 meters but was not among the top 12 jumpers, who all reached at least 12.56 meters.

Dan Ostrovsky '11 threw the javelin 55.69 meters on his first of three attempts. Chris Roe '11 also competed in the javelin throw and recorded his best throw, 59.16 meters, on his second attempt. Roe finished 35th overall.

One his first of three attempts in the hammer thrown, David Irving '11 marked a distance of 57.51 meters over four meters less than his qualifying throw which placed him 28th overall and out of contention to move on to the next round.

Harwick said he was pleased with how the athletes performed over the weekend.

"Having 14 athletes qualify for Regionals meant a lot to the whole team," he said. "This is the largest group we have sent in a while. We had both men and women compete in many different events."

Wypler said that while Regionals is a more challenging meet than the team typically competes in, the excitement surrounding the event makes it an enjoyable experience for athletes.

"The caliber of athletes at Regionals is super legit, and there are national title winners and All-Americans," she said. "Usually Dartmouth does well in meets but you have to work really hard to show yourself at this meet."
