A study by a team of researchers from Dartmouth, the University at Buffalo and Carnegie Mellon University has found that gender affects an individual’s perception of women’s anxiety in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines. Men are more likely than women to attribute this anxiety and self-doubt to internal factors, while women usually attribute such emotions to external factors.

In 1972, Larry Gonick dropped out of his mathematic graduate program at Harvard University to become a professional cartoonist. This term, he comes to Dartmouth as a Montgomery Fellow to share insights related to his educational comics that cover everything from American history to genetics.

Last Friday, Matt Wray, associate professor of sociology at Temple University, delivered a talk titled “What’s Up with White People? A Field Guide for the Perplexed” to a room of over 40 people in Carson Hall. Wray’s talk covered his work as a critical whiteness scholar — an extension of critical race theory that investigates how white identities are constructed — and his theories on how to classify white people.

With flu season in full swing, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is seeing a greater number of influenza cases than any time since the 2014-15 season, according to Michael Calderwood, infectious disease physician and regional hospital epidemiologist at DHMC. The Center for Disease Control is expecting similar numbers this year to the 2014-2015 season, during which the H3N2 strain was also the dominant strain of influenza and about 34 million Americans contracted the flu and about 56,000 died, he said.

On Tuesday, Jan. 9, the New Hampshire House of Representatives voted in favor of legalizing recreational marijuana. If passed into law, the bill, sponsored by two Republicans and two Libertarians, would legalize the cultivation, possession and use of marijuana by people 21 years of age or older. Additionally, the bill would authorize the licensing of marijuana wholesale, retail, cultivation and testing facilities and would also tax marijuana sales.

This fall, about 700 students submitted 6,929 applications for the 194 positions offered by 96 employers advertised through Dartboard, the Center for Professional Development’s online job portal. Compared to fall 2016, this past fall saw a similar number of positions available but a drop in the number of applicants, applications and employers.
