In June, athletic director Harry Sheehy announced that Joe Marsh will serve as the interim women’s ice hockey head coach for the 2017-18 season. The announcement came in the wake of head coach Laura Schuler’s appointment as head coach of the 2018 Canadian women’s Olympic hockey team. Schuler’s selection as the head coach for Canada makes her the first former national team player to serve as the team’s head coach at the Olympics. Named Dartmouth’s head coach in 2016, Schuler took over the program from long-time head coach Mark Hudak for the 2016-17 season before temporarily stepping down to lead Canada. Although Marsh will be the team’s third head coach over the last three years, the team remains optimistic about the season and continuing to rebuild and improve after finishing 7-21 overall last season.
The total number of security reports and arrests during this year’s Homecoming weekend decreased significantly from 2016, which both interim director of Safety and Security Keysi Montás and Hanover Police captain Mark Bodanza attributed to increased security measures during the bonfire, including a fence around the fire itself.
The newly-constructed Moosilauke Ravine Lodge will be dedicated this Saturday, Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. Construction on the Lodge finished earlier this month, according to director of outdoor programs Dan Nelson ’75, wrapping up the roughly year-long project that began with the demolition of the old Lodge in September 2016.
Seven hours and 55 minutes: that’s how long it takes me to get from my house in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado all the way to my dorm in Hanover, New Hampshire. My friends from home are always appalled when I tell them that, and they haven’t even heard how long it takes to get here from Los Angeles or Seattle. The idea of taking not only a four hour flight, but also a three hour bus ride — just to get to school — is unfathomable to them.
Propelled by a 14.6 percent growth in investment gains, Dartmouth’s endowment has increased to $4.96 billion — the highest it has ever been, the College announced last month. For the fiscal year ending June 30, the College earned a total of $630 million in investment gains, in addition to $77 million in gifts and other transfers.
Unlike last week against the University of Pennsylvania and the previous week against Holy Cross University, Dartmouth didn’t wait until the last play of the game to beat Yale University on Saturday. This time they did it with 34 seconds remaining. Drew Hunnicutt ’19’s 15-yard touchdown catch completed the largest comeback in Dartmouth history to lead the Big Green over Yale 28-27.

The Big Green men’s and women’s soccer teams each played at home against Princeton University on Saturday. The women’s game ended in a 2-0 loss for the Big Green, continuing a good season for Princeton and dropping Dartmouth to 4-6. The men won 2-1 with an overtime winner by senior Matt Danilack ’18. The game was Dartmouth’s first Ivy League contest of the season and improved its record to 6-2, putting the Big Green in a great position to compete for a third straight Ivy League championship.
The College is studying the possibility of adding additional residence halls in a portion of College Park, a largely underutilized 35-acre green space east of central campus. The park is home to several monuments and iconic structures such as Bartlett Tower, a statue of Robert Frost, Bema and Shattuck Observatory. The plan stems from concerns about the long-term sustainability of the College’s student housing amid recent student-body size increases.
For Sydney Kamen ’19, the model of her nonprofit So Others Are Protected, which turns recycled soaps from hotels into new bars of soap and distributes them to under-resourced communities, has always been “win-win-win.”

Another week, another win over a top-three national power for the rugby team. Two weeks after narrowly beating defending national champion Quinnipiac University, the Big Green steamrolled the preseason No. 3 United States Military Academy by a score of 45-7. With its first-ever win against Army, Dartmouth is undefeated through the most difficult portion of its schedule.
