The D Sports Awards 2018-19: Athletes of the Year

In this year’s The D Sports Awards, five of the top rookies, five of the top female athletes and five of the top male athletes at Dartmouth were pitted against each other. The D is happy to announce Emily Henrich, Tanguy Nef and Kierra Sweeney as the winners of this year’s awards.

Tanguy Nef ’20 was named the NCAA men’s alpine skier of the year.

At the end of each academic year, The Dartmouth’s sports section puts up players to be voted on by the student body as the best of the best. In this year’s The D Sports Awards, five of the top rookies, five of the top female athletes and five of the top male athletes are pitted against each other, the winners to emerge after a popular vote by members of the Dartmouth community.

Giroux’s 418 career draws places her 11th all-time in NCAA women’s lacrosse history.

Kathryn Giroux ’19 finished her collegiate career 11th all-time in NCAA history with 418 draws, but she did not even begin to focus on that aspect of the game until her sophomore year at Dartmouth.

Emily Henrich’s star performance her freshman year earned her the MA Sorensen award, the first ever for Dartmouth.

Looking at the résumé of Dartmouth women’s rugby’s team, it is hard to believe the team has only been a varsity program for four years. This year, the team has a national championship, five First Team All Americans, a Fulbright Scholar and now, one winner of the MA Sorensen Award. Emily Henrich ’22 became the first Dartmouth rugby player to receive the MA Sorensen Award. Presented by the Washington Athletic Club in Seattle, the award is given annually to the top women’s rugby player in the country. Kat Ramage ’19 was also nominated for the award. 

The Green-White football game featured a talented squad that hopes to build on last year's 9-1 record.

We are still several months away from Sept. 21, when the Dartmouth football team will travel to Florida for its first game of the season at Jacksonville University. But while the team’s first official game is still far off, the culmination of the Big Green’s spring practices arrived last week in its annual Green-White spring football game.

Cha'Mia Rothwell won the 100m hurdles at Heps to qualify for the NCAA Eastern Regionals later this month.


Track and field competes in Ivy Heps, New England championships

After months of competing indoors and outdoors, the Big Green track and field team is finally wrapping up its outdoor season. Last week, the team traveled to Princeton University to compete in the 2019 Ivy League Outdoor Heptagonal Championship where the men’s team took fifth and the women’s team took seventh. This past weekend, the team competed at the New England Championship, with the women taking first place and the men finishing in fifth. 


New indoor facility will give teams more practice availability

After a lengthy legal battle that went all the way to the New Hampshire Supreme Court, contractors finally began construction on a new indoor practice facility on campus this past winter. The new facility will provide space to Dartmouth sports teams — varsity and club — that have struggled with cancelled practices, icy New Hampshire winters and a lack of sufficient accommodations at the sole indoor practice facility currently on campus, Leverone Field House.


Pucks in Deep: Don’t Bet Against Holland and the Oilers

On Tuesday morning, the Edmonton Oilers introduced Ken Holland as their new general manager and president of hockey operations. Holland comes to Edmonton having served as Red Wings’ GM since 1997. In Detroit, he captured 10 Central Division crowns, four Presidents’ Trophies and three Stanley Cups. He oversaw the bulk of an incredible 25-year stretch in which the Wings made the postseason every year. 

Big Green softball swept Princeton this weekend to close out the season.

The Big Green lost two of three games this weekend to Cornell University, ending the season tied in last place in the Ivy League.


Baseball closes 15-26 season with series loss to Cornell

Per the old adage, baseball is a game of inches, and Dartmouth learned this lesson the hard way in its final week of competition. The Big Green lost three nail-biters, falling to the University of Maine 8-7 on Wednesday and losing to Cornell University 2-1 and 8-6 on Saturday. But the team rebounded to end its season on Sunday, winning 6-1 to give 30-year veteran head coach Bob Whalen his 600th career win.
