This afternoon, faculty, alumni and administrators will gather in Collis Common Ground for the third annual Symposium on Sexual Assault. The symposium, hosted by the Student and Presidential Committee on Sexual Assault, aims to move Dartmouth forward by fostering discussions about sexual violence on campus and asking attendants for their recommendations, SPCSA chair Sophia Pedlow ’15 said.

Greek organization leaders responded positively to a Student Assembly resolution that will provide dues-assistance funds to the governing council of Greek organizations in which a certain number of members complete Dartmouth Bystander Initiative training, pending undergraduate finance committee approval. Sorority and fraternity presidents added, however, that DBI training should be a priority of all Greek organizations regardless of financial incentives.

Last night, thousands of students across the globe awaited the fateful hour of Ivy decision releases, the hour that would seal students’ destinies for the next four years. Though many students went to sleep ecstatic for the years ahead, the larger majority could only consider what might have been.

Thayer School of Engineering’s proposed expansion is expected to accommodate a growing number of students interested in the field and increase majors’ course schedule flexibility. Students and faculty interviewed said they support the expansion, announced by College President Phil Hanlon last November.

In the two times I have been to Alpha Delta fraternity since coming to Dartmouth, my senses were awakened to sights, sounds and smells I had never known (or necessarily wanted to know) existed. Yet, my senses must not have been fully alert. What I did not observe during my first moments at AD was the air of creativity and entrepreneurship that runs rampant throughout the house. The AD brotherhood is, I have recently discovered, bursting with ideas, initiative and ambition, as members have begun their own startups.

Students donning “polished casual” attire lined up in the Hopkins Center on Thursday, hoping to escape the fluorescent lights and tiles of the Courtyard Café for the low-lit ambiance inside the Garage Bar, where groups of students sat around small tables and laughed over drinks. The room was filled with the sound of live jazz and conversation.

Maria Salgueiro grew up surrounded by Brazil’s racial inequality. Her African-Brazilian grandfather was the son of a former slave, and her grandmother was a white Portuguese woman. As she grew up, Salgueiro felt herself become aware of how her grandfather’s dark skin tone affected the way he was treated. At times, his easygoing nature and kind words made him the life of the party. Yet in other instances, she saw him cast aside, disregarded in public settings. She saw, through her personal experiences, that the idea of racial democracy — that people of all races and skin tones are treated equally in Brazil — was, and remains, a myth.

Thirteen speakers shared stories of sexual and relationship violence to an audience of over 100 at Speak Out Tuesday night. Stories varied from assault that took place on campus and during childhood to aggressive break-ups and instances of stalking.

Hundreds of students gathered on the Green last night to take a stance against sexual assault on campus, swaying arm-in-arm as they sang the College alma mater in near-zero temperatures. Student leaders took turns addressing the crowd from a makeshift podium atop the Winter Carnival snow sculpture.

A new Center for Community Action and Prevention will centralize existing efforts to prevent sexual assault and violence, Dean of the College Charlotte Johnson announced Friday. Located on the third floor of Robinson Hall, where Dartmouth’s Sexual Abuse Awareness Program is currently housed, the center will facilitate preexisting programs such as Sexual Assault Peer Advisors, Mentors Against Violence and the Dartmouth Bystander Initiative.

“Winter is coming,” and with it comes a new Winter Carnival theme: “Carnival of Thrones.” Many elements of the Carnival were planned to incorporate the theme, which was announced in the fall.

More than 700 students submitted over 8,200 applications in this winter’s corporate recruiting cycle, and about 340 of these applications have so far resulted in interviews, said Monica Wilson, the Center for Professional Development’s associate director. Wilson said that employers will conduct around 1,000 interviews in total, with half taking place on campus and the other half via phone or Skype.

A new training program teaches professors to serve as resources for sexual assault survivors. Hosted by the Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning and Sexual Abuse Awareness Program, the 90-minute sessions use interactive discussion to teach faculty how to assist students and colleagues that seek their help after incidents of sexual violence.

As the application season for campus clubs and organizations wound down, student groups observed notable change in freshman membership, with some seeing steep declines and other drawing more members than ever. Club officers speculated that program capacities, class personality and the Greek Leadership Council ban could have contributed to the shifts this year.

Students currently submit course reviews at the end of each term, which faculty may take into consideration when modifying courses, though the information relayed is not publicly accessible.

Former Eco-rep and member of the 2013 Big Green Bus crew Patrick Saylor '16 said he sees a few areas in which the big weekend creates a negative impact on the environment, including the bonfire and the amount of waste accumulated. Saylor said that the waste comes from more than the alcohol consumption, as there are a number of waste-producing events held on campus.
