Recipients of the Student and Presidential Committee on Sexual Assault’s Elizabeth A. Hoffman research grants have begun term-long projects that aim to diminish instances of sexual violence and increase awareness of Dartmouth’s resources. Bridget Lynn ’15 is studying the effectiveness of on-campus sexual assault resources like the sexual assault peer advisor program, and Silvia Arora ’16 is investigating the judicial review process at peer institutions.

Alumni are currently voting on whether to eliminate alumni-wide balloting in uncontested elections for alumni trustees and executive committee members. In addition to the change in balloting policy, the proposed amendment to the Alumni Association constitution would reduce the use of paper ballots and change the constitution’s wording to reflect name changes to Dartmouth’s medical and business schools.

Lisa Hogarty, a former vice president of campus services at Harvard University, will join the College next month as vice president for campus planning and facilities. At Dartmouth, Hogarty will oversee the College capital program, facilities planning, labor relations, operations and management of the Hanover Inn, according to a College press release.

Tuck School of Business graduates are waiting longer to accept job offers, a trend that Jonathan Masland, director of Tuck’s Career Development Office, attributed to the economy’s gradual improvement. Students, he said, can be more discerning in their job searches.

Daniel Potts, an archeologist who studies the Middle East, and Johnny Clegg, a South African musician and activist, will be next term’s Montgomery Fellows. The program brings internationally-recognized figures to Dartmouth to speak publicly to and engage informally with students. While no fellows will visit the College this winter, students have participated in informal meetings to discuss their thoughts about the program and ideas for its future.

Between fall 2012 and fall 2013, the proportion of alcohol incidents involving first-year students decreased from 49 to 46 percent of all incidents, according to data released Monday by the Dartmouth College Health Improvement Program and the Greek Leadership Council. During that time period, the overall number of incidents of intoxicated undergraduate students handled by Safety and Security dropped approximately 16 percent, from 99 incidents in fall 2012 to 83 in fall 2013. This shows a continued decline from prior years as well. In fall 2010 Safety and Security picked up 123 intoxicated students, and in fall 2011 they handled 111.

Max Fagin Th’11 may be one of the first men to walk on Mars. Fagin is one of 1,058 individuals chosen by Mars One — a program that aims to establish a permanent human settlement on the Red Planet — to advance into the second round of its application process. If chosen, Fagin would leave for Mars in 2024 and never return to Earth.

Fraternities extended 26 bids at the conclusion of men’s winter recruitment last weekend, according to Interfraternity Council rush chair Brett Kana ’14. The number of new members is comparable to past winter rush processes. Seven fraternities extended 30 bids last year.
