Charged with welcoming the vast majority of incoming freshmen to campus, director Peety Kaur ’15 and assistant director Sam Parker ’15 will lead the 2015 Dartmouth Outing Club First-Year Trips directorate. They aim to emphasize community service, sustainability and the incorporation of students from across campus in the application process.

ClearChoiceMD, an urgent care facility aimed to improve access and quality of medical assistance while reducing costs, opened its Lebanon doors Thursday. Visits will last just an hour each and cost about 10 times less than trips to the emergency room, founder Marcus Hampers ’89 said.

Newly selected Rhodes Scholar Miriam Kilimo ’14 is doing research and on-the-ground work in her hometown of Nairobi, Kenya, this fall, but she will enroll at Oxford University soon.Once there, the scholarship will fully support Kilimo’s master’s degree in women’s studies.

Over a catered meal in the Top of the Hop, Tuck Business School Dean Paul Danos received the chamber achievement award from the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce Thursday night. At the annual leadership award ceremony, Danos was recognized for his commitment to Dartmouth, his family and the Hanover community. Attendees dressed formally at the event’s reception, which was followed by a dinner in Alumni Hall.

The Upper Valley has seen a rise in the number of heroin overdoses in the past few months, and the rise has been partly attributed to a fentanyl–laced batch of heroin being distributed throughout the area.

The Co-op Food Stores are taking preliminary steps in a $5.3 million renovation to the Hanover flagship store, and store representatives said they hope to break ground within the next week. The renovation, which is expected to finish by July 2015, will include expanding the store by 2,700 square feet, increasing energy efficiency and revamping the 51-year-old building.

Over the past three months, members of a group called “Concerned About the Co-op” have discussed potential changes to Co-op Food Store employment policies, a cross-store boycott and the Co-op’s April Board of Directors elections. The debate was catalyzed by the June 13 firing of Daniel King and John Boutin, two longtime Lebanon Co-op employees who were dismissed without explanation, though some of the Co-op’s members say they had previous concerns.

Bicycle advisory lanes, or “suggestion lanes,” were implemented last week on Valley Road, parallel to East Wheelock street and within walking distance of the Green. The road has been painted with a 10-foot wide vehicle lane down the middle and two 5-foot lanes on either side suggested for pedestrians and cyclists.

The College is waiting to begin searching for a new Dean of the College until after the presidential steering and residential redesign committees present recommendations on improving student life, making it unlikely the search will begin until early 2015.

Since working as a volunteer coordinator for Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign in his hometown, DeBot has had an interest in politics and policy. He began to pursue this interest during his freshman year, taking government and public policy classes immediately and balancing his academic courseload with the rigors of Division I tennis.

The College will hire a trained investigator to examine and determine responsibility for sexual assault cases as well as mandate expulsion for students found guilty of rape, under a proposed sexual assault policy released March 14. In addition to substantially modifying Dartmouth’s adjudication process and imposing stricter sanctions on perpetrators, the proposal clarifies the College’s definition of certain terms such as consent.

A gastrointestinal virus has spread quickly across campus over the past two months, sending about 20 students per week to Dick’s House at its peak, though many more have likely been infected. The outbreak follows a Jan. 7 alert by the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services regarding increased norovirus activity in the state.

Surrounded by trees, shrubs, mounds of plywood and metal beams, Vincelette’s hand-built home is made from recycled materials found at dumps and local construction sites.

Dennis garnered 930 votes, 281 votes ahead of write-in candidate Sophia Pedlow ’15, according to a press release from the Election Planning and Advisory Committee. A total of 2,376 people cast ballots in this year’s election, an increase of 531 from last year.

In a debate Tuesday night, Student Assembly presidential and vice presidential candidates discussed the Assembly’s role and achievements on campus, sexual assault, the new residential housing system and the “Freedom Budget.” The debate, held in Paganucci Lounge and hosted by The Dartmouth, is the first of several that will occur this week.
