Matt Rube ’19, co-founder of the Dartmouth Climbing Club, was one of two climbers who represented the Big Green at the 2017 Collegiate National Rock Climbing Championships in San Diego, California. Rube advanced to the Speed Finals, finishing in sixth place, and helped secure Dartmouth’s ninth-place team finish.
Frankie Sands ’19, a recent transfer from Norwich University, has dominated the rugby scene, earning her top honors nationally. Most recently, she was named as one of four finalists for the Sorensen Award, given to the best collegiate women’s rugby player in the nation. While Sands has found success here at Dartmouth and throughout her career, her journey to rugby has been anything but conventional.
Jamie Susanin ’17, one of two seniors on the women’s golf team, has consistently led Dartmouth in scoring performance all season. Making a resurgence from a quiet junior year season, Susanin helped the Big Green secure a fifth-place tie at the Ivy League Championships with Brown University this past weekend.
Courtney Weisse ’17, an attacker on the women’s lacrosse team, leads the Big Green with 34 goals and 38 points this season. Weisse has scored at least one goal in every game this season and has scored five goals on three occasions, most recently on Saturday versus Cornell University.
At the Lynne Marchiando Trophy in Boston, Massachusetts last weekend, Rebecca McElvain ’19 helped the Big Green sailing team win its first conference team race in 15 years. McElvain, one of Dartmouth’s top crews, and teammate Charles Lalumiere ’17 swept the New England Intercollegiate Sailing Association weekly awards.
The men’s lacrosse team has won just one game this season thus far, but its freshman goalkeeper George Christopher ’20 has been a relative bright spot. A touted prospect who played at Washington, D.C.’s Gonzaga College High School, Christopher was recruited by former Big Green coach Andy Towers but now plays under head coach Brendan Callahan, a fellow Gonzaga alumnus.
Men's Nordic Skiing:
With spring quickly approaching, Dartmouth softball is out in full force, seeking its third league championship in four years. Last season, the Big Green finished with a 27-15 overall record and a 15-5 record in conference play. While Dartmouth was a favorite to win the league crown, the women lost 8-5 against Harvard University in a winner-take-all Game 2 in the Ivy League’s North Division. Harvard later lost to Princeton University in a best-of-three series.
The Dartmouth sat down with three athletic administrators — senior associate athletic director for physical education & recreation Joann Brislin, director of fitness Hugh Mellert and coordinator of intramural and club sports Theresa Hernandez — to talk about the nuts and bolts of PE and intramural sports.
Zumba:
With 17 different athletes on the U.S. National Ski Team currently affiliated with Dartmouth in some way, the College has consistently served as a hub for top skiers in the nation. Although each U.S. National Team skier who has come through Dartmouth has a unique background, all share the same deep passion for skiing that began at a young age.
While at Dartmouth, Joe Walsh ’84 discovered a love for cross-country skiing. That love launched a Paralympic career for the Braintree, Massachusetts native, who went on to work for the U.S. National Team. In 2009, he founded Adaptive Sports New England, a nonprofit which seeks to increase participation in sports among young adults in New England with visual, mobility and physical impairments.
In April 2016, Laura Schuler was named the next Dartmouth women’s ice hockey head coach. In addition to coaching at Dartmouth, Schuler is also in her second season as head coach of the Canadian National Team. With all of this experience, many hockey fans were highly anticipating Schuler’s Dartmouth debut and the the future prospects of the 2016-17 season after coming off a tough 2015-16 season with a 6-19-3 record. Unfortunately, this season has not been going as well as many fans had hoped or expected it to go. The team is currently 2-12-0 and on a seven-game losing streak.

In addition to freshmen running around the bonfire, this upcoming weekend will present several thrilling athletic matchups that show off Dartmouth’s intense Ivy League rivalries. Beyond celebrating alumni returning to campus, Homecoming is also a time to showcase Big Green pride, both new and ageless, across the College’s many athletic disciplines. Here are some of the games to attend this weekend and the histories behind the matchups.
With 35 varsity sports, 33 club sports and 24 intramural sports and more than 75 percent of undergraduates participating, it is safe to say that a love for athletics runs deep at the College. However, not many people know the evolution of Dartmouth’s varsity athletics program, beginning in 1769. This week, The Dartmouth explores the history of sports at the College through an overview of landmark events, traditions and obscure sports.
Growing up, every child who has ever played a sport has admired an older or professional player. While few ever meet their idols, even fewer have the opportunity to play for them. Zoë Leonard ’19, however, is one of the few playing for her childhood idol Tara Hittle, an assistant coach for the women’s volleyball team.
