As one of Dartmouth’s most successful club sports, the men’s rugby team is no stranger to victory. The Dartmouth Rugby Football Club increased its consecutive streak of Ivy League XV Championship wins to 12 this past November. The team also competes outside the Ivy League, traveling across the U.S. to take on some of the country’s top teams in both fifteens and sevens competition. The DRFC took home back-to-back USA Sevens Collegiate Rugby Championships in 2011 and 2012. The Class of 2020 has only added to this long tradition of excellence in rugby over its four years competing for the DRFC.

Cha’Mia Rothwell ’20 has left big spikes to fill after her four seasons competing for Big Green track and field. Rothwell leaves Dartmouth with nine career Ivy League Heptagonal Championship titles, numerous athletic and academic awards and several school and league records under her belt. This year, she became only the third woman ever to win the indoor Heps 60m hurdle for four straight years. Rothwell will head to Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business next year to join their track and field team in her final year of NCAA eligibility.

After reaching the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association semifinals this fall, five players from the women’s rugby team received postseason honors on April 17. Idia Ihensekhien ’21 and Ariana Ramsey ’22 were named to the All-NIRA Tier 1 Team while Kristin Bitter ’23, Sophia Haley ’22 and Marin Pennell ’21 received honorable mentions. Although unable to play the spring season, the Big Green followed up its 2018 NIRA Championship by winning the 2019 Ivy Rugby Championship and advancing to the NIRA Championship semifinals, where Dartmouth fell just short in a one-point loss to Harvard University.

Dartmouth’s remote format has posed new challenges for student-athletes. Away from campus, many have to now consider how to both stay in shape with limited resources and engage with their teams through virtual platforms. With the Ivy League’s cancellation of all practices and competitions for the remainder of the academic year, sports that have main competitive seasons in the spring have taken the brunt of the impact. However, other teams still utilize the spring term for development and training, and they are also getting creative to work around these new mandates.

Something is certainly different for the Dartmouth men’s lacrosse team this year. The team’s exciting 3-0 start marks its best start to a season since 2006. After wins over Merrimack University and Bryant University, the Big Green continued its strong performance with a 14-5 win over the University of Massachusetts Lowell this past weekend.

The No. 18 Big Green women’s lacrosse team continued its strong start to the season with a 16-8 win over Boston University Saturday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field. Dartmouth put the pressure on the Terriers early and was able to keep it up the whole game. The 2019 Ivy League champions return to action next weekend at Brown University in its first conference game of the season.

The Dartmouth skiing teams headed up to Maine this past weekend to compete in the Colby Carnival. The teams improved on their two third-place finishes this season, beating Middlebury College by four points to take second. The University of Vermont won its third straight carnival with 899 points.

Allie Winstanley ’23 was recently named to the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Soccer Association’s All-New England First Team after a stellar freshman campaign. The forward had an impressive offensive season that broke Big Green freshman records. In addition to the New England First Team, she earned a spot on the All-Ivy Second Team and was one of only four Ivy League students named to the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region First Team.

Women’s basketball has kept busy this winter break, traveling as far as Chicago to play a total of 10 games. The team ended its nonconference schedule with a 6-7 record. Now, the Big Green prepares for important Ivy League games starting with a home game against Harvard University on this Saturday as the team seeks to improve upon its fifth place finish in the Ivy League last year.

Women’s rugby (2-2) defeated Quinnipiac University (2-4) Saturday afternoon by a score of 52-38 to close out its regular season 15s competition. After two consecutive losses in recent weeks to perennial rival Harvard University and emerging force United States Military Academy, Big Green rugby was able to rebound and provide a special Senior Day and Homecoming victory.

Women’s rugby fell to the undefeated United States Military Academy at home Saturday afternoon, 39-19. After a season opening routing of Brown University, the Big Green faced two tough competitors in Harvard University and Army and ultimately fell to both. Despite the loss, the 2018 national champions have shown progress since their first loss of the season two weekends ago to Harvard.

Women’s rugby fell to Harvard University 50-34 Saturday afternoon despite a strong second-half charge. The Harvard-Dartmouth matchup has proven to be a tough test for both teams in recent years and is shaping up to be similarly challenging in the 2019-20 season. In Oct. 2018, Harvard bested the Big Green at the Ivy Rugby Championship. The next month, Dartmouth struck back and beat the Crimson to win the National Intercollegiate Rugby Association title. This season’s NIRA preseason rankings picked the Big Green to repeat as national champions with Harvard again as runner up.

Dartmouth softball star Micah Schroder ’20 was recently awarded Ivy League Player of the Year for her incredible 2019 performance. She is the first Dartmouth player to win the award since Katie McEachern ’16 in 2016. After earning unanimous First-Team, All-Ivy recognition, Schroder was recently named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division I All-Northeast Region First Team.

Looking at the résumé of Dartmouth women’s rugby’s team, it is hard to believe the team has only been a varsity program for four years. This year, the team has a national championship, five First Team All Americans, a Fulbright Scholar and now, one winner of the MA Sorensen Award. Emily Henrich ’22 became the first Dartmouth rugby player to receive the MA Sorensen Award. Presented by the Washington Athletic Club in Seattle, the award is given annually to the top women’s rugby player in the country. Kat Ramage ’19 was also nominated for the award.

The No. 39 men’s tennis team’s season came to a close this Friday in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Dartmouth competed against No. 20 University of Michigan in Waco, TX, losing 4-2. The Big Green finished its 2018-19 season 15-9 in a tie for fourth place in the Ivy League.

The softball team traveled to California over spring break to play a challenging slate of games in preparation for upcoming Ivy League play. The team competed in the California State University Northridge/Loyola Marymount University Tournament and played a total of seven games out west before returning to the East Coast for its conference opener against Columbia University. As the defending Ivy League co-champions with Harvard University, the team is looking to build upon last season’s success after hiring new head coach Jennifer Williams.
