The honor is awarded to student-athletes who are starters or key reserves for their officially-recognized varsity teams and who carry a cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0 or better. Each Ivy League school is allowed to nominate five men and women from its eligible pool of student-athletes for the award.

As a high school senior, Perry received offers to play soccer for the University of Virginia and for Cornell, along with an offer from Chris Wielgus, the Big Green women's basketball head coach, to play basketball for Dartmouth. Perry was undeniably qualified to play basketball at the collegiate level, but she had more passion for soccer. And of all the schools Perry visited, she favored Dartmouth over the others. But the head coach of the Dartmouth women's soccer team was uninterested in her. Perry was torn.

Dartmouth dug itself a bigger hole on Friday night as Princeton (18-6, 9-2 Ivy) handed the Big Green a humbling 62-49 loss. Fortunately, Dartmouth got into shape on Saturday evening and delivered a convincing 67-45 win over the University of Pennsylvania (4-20, 2-9 Ivy).
