With six league games remaining in the regular season, Dartmouth (11-10-2, 9-5-2 ECACHL) finds itself, for the first time, on firm ground. Unbeaten in its last four contests, the Big Green has propelled itself through the ECACHL ranks to third place, topping fourth place by a single point and trailing frontrunners Colgate and Cornell by three and four points, respectively. Since New Year's, Dartmouth is 4-0-2 in league games, putting the Big Green in an enviable position to acquire a coveted first round bye in the ECACHL playoffs come March -- that is, if they can take care of business this weekend.

Dartmouth saw its defense and offense click together, beating Union 5-1 on Friday and RPI 6-3 the following night. With the victories, Dartmouth reached the .500 plateau for the first time this season.

The 8-10-1 (6-5-1 ECAHCL) Big Green have had less than a satisfying season thus far, highlighted by last weekend's unimaginably frustrating 3-2 loss to Holy Cross on a shorthanded goal with 29 seconds left in the game. Yet after all that has already gone wrong for Dartmouth, the men in green remain in the upper half of the ECACHL standings. They will look to improve their lot this weekend while playing host to Union and Rensselaer.

Since spring term of last year, the Dartmouth fitness center has been relocated to our miniature indoor track. I am all for expansion, upgrading, and all that good stuff, but when it is at the expense of the well-being of our body and souls, attention must be paid! It is understood that concessions and sacrifices come with the territory of rebuilding, but a minimal level of exercise capabilities is not too much to ask.

Following three failed attempts to push the puck past the Crusaders' blue line during its late-game 5-on-4 advantage, Dartmouth saw an errant pass picked off by junior James Sixsmith 10 feet from the Big Green goal. Sixsmith deked out netminder Mike Devine '08 and potted the winning goal with 28.9 seconds remaining, silencing the previously rowdy home crowd and giving Holy Cross the 3-2 victory.

Dartmouth (7-8-1, 6-5-1 ECACHL) could not use the momentum of a huge third period effort against RPI on Saturday to spur them past the Union Dutchmen (10-8-4, 3-3-2 ECACHL) the following evening, as a tying score by sophomore Michael Beynon slapped the Big Green with its first draw of the year.

The Dartmouth men's hockey team has a very clear New Year's resolution: to turn its season around right now. The 6-8 Big Green (5-5 ECACHL) will look to find the same resolve that led last year's squad -- which was 6-7-1 at the same point in 2004 -- to win 12 of its final 16 regular season contests. After an 0-4 start, the 2005-06 team has won six of its last ten and survived a grueling December, going 2-3 against solid competition, including a thrilling New Year's Eve overtime victory against Bemidji State (9-7-2) in the consolation game of the Sheraton/TD Banknorth Catamount Cup at the University of Vermont.

If only the hockey season could have begun on November 12. That is what Dartmouth icers are saying to themselves after sweeping through Brown and Yale this weekend, extending their winning streak to three games. The Big Green (3-4, ECACHL 3-4), led by a career performance from team captain Mike Ouellette '06, outlasted the Bears 3-2 and, routed the Bulldogs 9-4.

It took four losses and a number of unlucky breaks for Dartmouth men's hockey to finally achieve a victory -- and what a win it was. After falling to Colgate on Friday 3-2 in a loss marked by missed opportunities and early miscues, the Big Green stormed back on Saturday to dismantle the No. 3 team in the nation 6-1 in what was certainly Dartmouth's most dominating offensive outburst in recent history.

Three consecutive losses would not have been an ideal start to Dartmouth hockey's centennial season. However, the Big Green can transform its recent woes into a true centennial commemoration with victories this weekend over two nationally-ranked opponents. Dartmouth will welcome No. 17 Colgate (5-1-1, ECACHL 2-0) and No. 3 Cornell (3-1, ECACHL 2-0) to Thompson Arena for the 2005-06 home opener.

It just wouldn't be the Big Green Invitational if a Dartmouth player didn't make it to the final match. Jeff Schechtman '08 did not disappoint.

When planning for the 2005-06 hockey season, Dartmouth's men certainly did not consider starting the year 0-3. After a stinging defeat at the hands of Harvard in the season-opener, the Big Green looked to amend its early woes with contests at Princeton (2-2, ECACHL 1-1) and Quinnipiac (8-2, ECACHL 2-0). It was not to be, however, as Dartmouth (0-3, ECACHL 0-3) was swept in a league weekend for the first time since '02-'03, shutout at Princeton 3-0 and outdone by Quinnipiac 7-5.

In a reversal from the recent nail-bitter finishes which had underscored the storied Dartmouth-Harvard hockey rivalry, the Crimson overtook the Big Green 6-2 with a crushing third-quarter effort on Saturday at Cambridge. Harvard's NHL-like run-and-gun offensive plan paid dividends in the final frame in the form of three unanswered goals, giving Dartmouth its second 0-1 start in as many years.

Dartmouth football has, unfortunately, learned to start small and appreciate gains here and there. For instance, the team's heralded homecoming victory over Columbia is seen as a positive step forward and a potential momentum-booster even while Columbia has resided in the doghouse of the Ivy League for almost four decades. And thank the Lord for Colgate, without which the Big Green would lack entirely in the category of impressive wins. Nevertheless, football season is ten weeks long and one game can transform a lost cause into a worthy year.

There is no doubt that alumni who can easily recall the glory days of Dartmouth football, either during the early 1990s or even as far back as the mid-20th century, when the Big Green footballers reached their national peak, have viewed the past eight seasons with disdain. However, for one brisk October afternoon, 6,222 grimaces turned to smiles and the burly men of Dartmouth were kings again as the Big Green (2-4, Ivy 1-2) triumphed over Columbia (2-4, Ivy 0-3), 17-6, at Memorial Field for a homecoming victory.

One goal. That is all that separated the 15th-ranked Dartmouth hockey team from a berth in the NCAA tournament, at least if you ask the players. A 2-1 loss to Vermont in the third and decisive contest of the ECACHL playoff's second round was also the last game for the 2004-05 Big Green (20-13-2). Although Dartmouth finished amongst the nation's top 16 teams, it was not invited to join the 16 squads participating in the national tournament, as unranked Bemidji State and Mercyhurst claimed automatic bids for their respective conference titles. But as the ice solidifies in Thompson Arena in preparation for the October 29 opener, a new season dawns on a Dartmouth hockey team with untapped--and unproven--potential.

At least they are not 0-7. That is just about all Dartmouth football fans can console themselves with as the Big Green (1-4, 0-2 Ivy) heads into a Homecoming weekend matchup with Columbia (2-3, 0-2 Ivy). Unlike last year's team, the 2005 Big Green has won a game prior to Homecoming. Nevertheless, they have also lost four straight and find themselves on the edge of disaster and, even worse, a repeat of last season's 1-9 debacle.
(10/17/05 9:00am)
One quarter of outstanding football was not enough for Dartmouth (1-4, Ivy 0-2), as three quarters of Holy Cross (5-2) domination doomed the visiting Big Green to its fourth consecutive loss. Once again, Dartmouth was no match for its opponents under the weather conditions in what was the first career start for Big Green quarterback Josh Cohen '09. Cohen lit it up in the fourth quarter, but two late touchdowns were not enough to prevent the Crusaders from pillaging Dartmouth 28-16.

Rain, mud and a stifling Yale defense were more than enough to drown the Big Green at the Yale Bowl on Saturday. Dartmouth (1-3, Ivy 0-2) was unable to halt its slide towards the Ivy League cellar as the Big Green fell to the Bulldogs (2-2, Ivy 2-0) 13-0, shutout by Yale for the first time since 1979. After a season-opening upset over Colgate, Dartmouth has dropped three straight including two Ivy League losses to Penn and now Yale.

After a momentous victory over Colgate in the season-opener three weeks ago, Big Green football (1-2, 0-1 Ivy) has dropped its last two games. Before the bitter memories of last year's 1-9 meltdown become a continued reality, Dartmouth will look to snap its skid at the Yale Bowl this Saturday. The Big Green will meet the Bulldogs (1-2, 1-0 Ivy) for a matinee match-up of tough defenses and struggling offenses.
