Seven former members of the women’s swimming and diving team have walked on to the women’s rowing team, citing a desire to compete and remain members of a varsity program. The women’s swimming and diving team was among five varsity sports programs that the College eliminated in July.

After a recent increase in COVID-19 cases throughout Grafton County, the state of Vermont has implemented leisure travel restrictions against the area. Those who travel between Vermont and Grafton County, which Vermont has designated a “quarantine county,” for non-essential purposes have been asked to quarantine upon arrival in Vermont.

Leon Black ’73, a former College Trustee and namesake of the Black Family Visual Arts Center, maintained a business relationship with the late financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein even after Epstein was first convicted of sex-related crimes in 2008, according to a report by The New York Times. Black is facing subpoenas from U.S. Virgin Islands officials as part of their investigation into Epstein’s estate.

Though nearly all classes remain remote this fall, labs and other project-based courses have found ways to maintain the experience of hands-on learning. Some courses have adapted to the limitations of virtual instruction by shipping material kits, which include everything from rock samples to small presses for printing, to each student.

The bustling campus to which students typically arrive at the beginning of fall term was noticeably absent this year. Under the College’s reopening plan, students are required to quarantine in their dorm rooms for two weeks, beginning with an at least 48-hour period of strict quarantine as soon as they move in. This system has required both students and the College to get creative about programming, entertainment and dining.

In a letter to the Board of Trustees on Aug. 25, 13 members of the swimming and diving team alleged that the College’s decision in July to cut five sports teams discriminated against Asian athletes. Signers of the letter, after conducting an informal survey of athletes at the College, claim that the program eliminations have reduced the number of Asian athletes at Dartmouth by nearly half.

Though Jewel of India was unable to renew its original lease with the College, the Hanover restaurant has relocated to the property previously occupied by Noodle Station and The Swirl & Pearl at 11 Lebanon St. Jewel of India will re-open for takeout orders on July 15.

Nancy LaRocque — who most recently served as associate head coach and recruiting coordinator of the women’s rowing program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison — has been named as the new women’s rowing head coach for the Big Green. She will replace Kelly Harris, who served as interim head coach during the 2019-2020 season after Wendy Bordeau stepped down from her head coaching post last summer. LaRocque has coached collegiate rowing for 17 years and guided multiple Division I programs to national recognition.

Following a year-long international search, the College announced on Wednesday that Stony Brook University political science professor Jason Barabas ’93 has been appointed director of the Rockefeller Center for Public Policy. Barabas currently directs the master’s program in public policy at Stony Brook and will begin his position at Dartmouth, where he will also teach as a government professor, on July 1.

Students and alumni have rallied to support Dirt Cowboy Cafe — a Hanover coffee shop struggling during the coronavirus shutdown — by ordering coffee beans online. After a spike in orders across the country, owner Tom Guerra said that he was able to rehire two full-time employees and catch up on rent.

Student-athletes will be greeted with a new indoor practice facility when they return to campus. While the 70,000-square-foot facility faced several roadblocks to approval, construction officially finished in April. Dartmouth is now home to the largest permanent indoor practice facility in the Ivy League.
