The combination of the Giants' loss to the Eagles last night and the fact that it is Thanksgiving week means I am going to use my ace in the hole I am going to write about the results of my betting column from earlier this term ("Through the Lens of Lentz," Sept. 27). In other words, I am too annoyed to think of anything else at the moment. Let's get started.

We live in a different sports world today than we did even a few years ago. Even though I have only been around for two decades, I know it. In fact, unless you have been living under a rock for the past week, you know it too.

This was a good weekend. Football beat Cornell. Hockey beat Princeton. Field hockey beat Cornell (and on its senior day, no less). The Giants beat the Patriots. Yes, a good weekend all around.

Snow in October. Nice Halloween, right? Freshmen from the South, how are you guys doing right now?

Dartmouth football, 37-0. That's a pretty powerful win. Granted, Columbia is now 0-5, but for Dartmouth to put up 37 points and shut out a team says something.

What is Homecoming?

Last week I suggested that we have more home football games at night and an Ivy League championship game for the sport ("Through the Lens of Lentz," Oct. 4). Two weeks ago, I wrote on the need to change the Class of 1953 Commons ("Through the Lens of Lentz," Sept. 27). This week there will be more suggestions. There will be movie references. What would we have if the noner columnist had his druthers? Well, let's find out.

Imagine that you know you have to take a really tough class this Fall, one of these courses that will take five hours of work per class. More than that, this course is so important that it will define your year. Whether you are applying for a job, med school, law school, non-profit organization, whatever, this is important.

I still have absolutely nothing to write about. It's been almost a year of me and this absurdly poor-titled column, and yet I still do not have much for you.

Right now, Sophomore Summer is in its NFC or AFC Championship stage. That is to say, most people are thinking, "This is really awesome and has been great, and I can't believe it's going to be over soon."

Should college athletes, and Dartmouth athletes more specifically, be paid? Well, maybe yes to the first part, but I think not for Dartmouth students sorry, Big Green.

First off, let's get to crew. I often give these guys flak. It's not because I don't think these people are athletes, it's just the thought of the sport itself. I mean, I can't really imagine someone like me with EBAs on speed dial trying to cut weight to be a lightweight rower. It just wouldn't fit.

Ever notice that Dartmouth has its own version of the NFL draft? Or even a fantasy league draft? No, you say?

"We go every Sunday, pray, come back home and then do it again next week."

Despite Wednesday's forecasted thunderstorms props to the Sun God, they never came it was time for my first round of golf of the spring.

As I sit here outside writing this column I was supposed to take a nap but the fire alarm went off, good thing it's nice out, right? I am reminded yet again of the cruelty of the "almost was." I almost was asleep again after taking two exams, but then the alarm rang.

Imagine that Dartmouth's athletic teams stopped playing. Say, for instance, it turned out like this:

This could have been the week of the college underdog. After Virginia Commonwealth University and Butler University effectively destroyed everyone's bracket mine included Butler ousted VCU to return to the national championship. Butler was only the third (second, officially) eighth seed in NCAA tournament history to reach the national championship.

When I first agreed to write a column, I thought, "It can't be too hard, and it has to be easier than writing a story every week."

Dartmouth (4-3, 1-0 Ivy) broke Harvard's four-game winning streak. The Big Green lost its previous two games against Duke University and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill by a combined 13 goals.
