The sports season has ended for all but two Big Green athletes — shoutout to track and field’s Dana Giordano ’16 and Kaitlin Whitehorn ’16 for making it to the NCAA Outdoor Championship — and teams are beginning to look forward to next year when the ’15s will be gone and a new class of ’19s will help propel Dartmouth athletic programs in their quests for Ivy League or ECAC titles. As such, that puts our column in a little bit of a bind. But, as dedicated columnists, we decided to call an audible and change our tactics for our final column.

Spring term and spring sports seasons are winding down here in Hanover. The only Big Green teams in action this weekend are softball, men’s and women’s track and field, sailing and the crew teams. Dovydas Sakinis ’16 and Taylor Ng ’17 are also still competing as singles in the NCAA tennis tournament. This weekend, the softball team will compete in the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year, this time in Tallahassee, Florida, in a pool with No. 9 Florida State University, the University of South Carolina and the University of Central Florida. The crew teams will also head into their own championship weekend.

It’s championship season for the Big Green. Last week saw the softball team repeat as Ivy League champions, and this week their counterparts on the baseball team will look to capture their first title since 2010. On the courts, the women’s tennis team will head down for a first round matchup in the NCAA tournament. This weekend promises to have some exciting Big Green action as teams look to add to the trophy case and perform on a national stage.

We’ve come to one of the biggest sports weekends of the year, with the NHL and NBA playoffs in full swing and the Kentucky Derby set for Saturday. Despite the national sports scene, it is a relatively quiet weekend for Big Green athletics, as only six teams are in action. We’re taking a different approach to this week’s primer, and rather than focusing solely on the Big Green’s competitions, we’re choosing one Dartmouth series and a second Ivy League game that directly impacts the Big Green.

While it may seem like it’s only just begun, the spring season is coming to a close, and most Big Green teams get their final shot at Ivy League competition this week. On the diamond, the Big Green is in an ideal position, with opportunities to lock up postseason position for both baseball and softball this weekend. Men’s lacrosse and men’s tennis will also be in Hanover this weekend looking to grab one final victory while heavyweight crew hosts its only events of the spring.

Surprise! Despite what the weather may indicate, it’s actually April, meaning we’re in the heart of the spring season. Luckily for them, the majority of Dartmouth’s teams will escape the snow by hitting the road this weekend with only women’s tennis and men’s lacrosse sticking around in Hanover. Nevertheless, this should still be a critical weekend as teams try to establish themselves midway through the Ivy League slate.

Spring term has finally arrived and with it the return of some of the Big Green’s most successful programs. The baseball team is looking for its eighth consecutive Red Rolfe Division title, while the softball team is looking to return to the NCAA Tournament and have repeat success at winning the Ivy League Championship, which it did for the first time in program history last year. Fourteen Big Green teams are in action this weekend, and here are some of the marquee matchups.

As February comes to a close, Dartmouth spring sports are ramping up. Nearly half of all Dartmouth sports teams are in action this weekend as we have officially reached the transition period between winter and spring. A few of the highlights of this weekend that we will not preview include men’s lacrosse travelling to South Bend to face national powerhouse No. 2 University of Notre Dame and women’s lacrosse jetting off to Gainesville to face the No. 4 University of Florida. Additionally, the women’s hockey team will begin its Eastern Coast Athletic Conference Championship push in the first round against Clarkson University.

Just as many students suddenly realize how little time is left in the term, the clock is ticking for many of Dartmouth’s winter teams looking to end their seasons on a strong note or prepare for postseason play. This weekend will see some of the Big Green spring teams kick off their seasons with non-conference play, such as the defending Ivy League Champion softball team, which is traveling south for the University of South Florida Wilson DeMarini tournament and the men’s lacrosse team heading to Columbus, Ohio, to take on Ohio State University. We chose however, to focus on some of the winter sports heading into dramatic clashes as they sprint to the finish.

This upcoming weekend sees nine Dartmouth teams in action as both the term and winter sports seasons wind down. Coming off an emotionally-charged Carnival Weekend is always tough, but the Big Green will need to avoid a hangover as they face tough opposition and high stakes this weekend. Several teams are looking to make a playoff push in order to secure themselves a place at NCAAs, while others are looking to right the ship in time for a late-season run.
(02/05/15 11:01pm)
After a week of midterms and never-ending snow, the three-day celebration of Winter Carnival is finally upon us. In addition to the excitement of the polar bear plunge and ice sculpting contests, many of the Big Green teams will compete this weekend for their own share of Carnival glory. The basketball teams will face off against tough Ivy League competition in an attempt to return to their early-season winning ways, and the skiing team will look to break through for a historic top finish.
(01/29/15 10:41pm)
This may be Super Bowl Sunday and the week before Winter Carnival, but that doesn’t mean that the big game (or planning ahead) should dominate your weekend schedule, as 14 Dartmouth teams are in action across the northeast this weekend as well. Here, we will refrain from making predictions on the Super Bowl, and instead offer our insight and analysis on three Big Green contests taking place this weekend.
(01/22/15 10:26pm)
As Dartmouth teams turn to the heart of league play, 14 Big Green teams will head into the weekend looking to position themselves for post-season opportunities. The men’s and women’s swim and dive teams host their annual Dartmouth Invitational on Friday and Saturday while men’s and women’s tennis teams will also host kick-off weekend matches. The men’s and women’s track teams look to build on two positive results as they take on Ivy Leauge foes Yale University and Columbia University while the men’s and women’s ski teams head to the University of Vermont Carnival to try and take down the defending EISA champs.
(01/16/15 2:23am)
In the second weekend of the term, 10 Dartmouth teams are set to compete across the Northeast. After strong performances from the men’s and women’s track and field teams and the women’s hockey team last weekend, they return to action at home for big matchups on Saturday.
(01/10/15 4:22pm)
The first weekend of winter term is upon us, and while that has brought freezing temperatures to the Upper Valley, action is heating up on the rinks and courts of Hanover as nine varsity teams compete this weekend. Many of Dartmouth’s winter sports teams already have some competition under their belts, but the new year brings the meat of most teams’ league schedules. As the Big Green gears up for a big weekend of competition, we’re here to get you ready as well.

PRINCETON, N.J. — The Dartmouth football team needed two things to happen on Saturday to clinch a share of the Ivy League title, which would have been the program’s 18th overall and first since 1996. Dartmouth needed to defeat Princeton University in New Jersey, and Harvard University needed to fall to Yale University.
(11/15/14 3:30pm)
In the final home game of the season, the Big Green football team came away with another convincing victory, defeating Brown University 44-21, to send its seniors off in style.
