For many recruits, official visits are the best chance they have to learn about a school and how they will fit into the environment as both a student and an athlete. More than a normal college visit, an official visit, also known as a recruiting trip, offers the prospective student-athlete a chance to meet other students and recruits and experience all a school has to offer, from residence halls to dining facilities to the social life.

The 03755 ZIP code, which comprises the entire Town of Hanover, has given almost $500,000 in campaign donations during the 2012 election cycle, a number that is on par with past presidential election years, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. The ratio of the donations, however, differs from previous cycles, Associate Director of Curricular Programs of the Rockefeller Center Ron Shaiko said. This year, 62 percent of all money raised has gone to the Democratic Party or its candidates and 38 percent has gone to the Republican Party or Republican politicians.

The Dartmouth women were led by Jane Lee '15, who finished fifth overall with a score of five-under. Sarah Knapp '14 finished tied for 15th with a score of 14-over-par. Savannah Grice '15 also finished tied for 15th, but her score did not count, as she had not qualified in the match as part of Dartmouth's second team.

Dartmouth football made its glorious return to the gridiron on Saturday with a dominating 35-7 win over Butler University. Quite literally from the opening kickoff, the Big Green ran away with the game. The offense was clicking and the defense was adhering strictly to the philosophy of "bend, don't break."

The Jones Seminar lecture series, sponsored by the Thayer School of Engineering, began in the 1970s and was expanded in 1988 to incorporate a wider range of topics. With a new year now upon us and a new class settling into Hanover, it's time to ring in another year of Big Green sports. Last year, Dartmouth teams were very successful, with the football team finishing in tie for second in the Ivy League, the men's hockey team advancing in the ECAC playoffs and track runner Abbey D'Agostino '14 almost qualifying for the 2012 Summer Olympics.

In the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal, many colleges and universities are looking inward, wondering and questioning the role that sports plays in their institutions. According to the Freeh Report, the failures at Pennsylvania State University ultimately came down to a desire to shield the football program from scandal and protect the reputations of the program and the school.

While I was cleaning my room over winter break, I found my autographed Joe Paterno photo buried among some commemorative Sports Illustrated issues. About a month before, Paterno had been fired from Pennsylvania State University. In December, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He died in January.

At about 10 p.m. on June 22, with little pomp and circumstance, a man in a brown jacket and green tie was escorted in handcuffs from Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte, Pa. He had been convicted of 45 criminal counts, all of which centered on his inappropriate sexual conduct with minors. Jerry Sandusky, the former Pennsylvania State University assistant football coach, could face over 400 years in prison.

As their seasons and tenure at the College come to a close, senior athletes have had time to reflect on their last moments on the field, track or court. Several have served as leaders on their teams while also maintaining academic goals. These include football team running back Nick Schwieger '12, women's hockey team defenseman Moira Scanlon '12, golf team member Peter Williamson '12, and women's cross country and track team runner Alexi Pappas '12.

The Big Green received a tough draw, facing a Davenport team that had lost just three times all season, only one of which came in a non-exhibition match. The Panthers, who won the title in 2011 as well, and the Big Green were ranked first and second, respectively, in Rugbymag.com's divisional rankings, making the teams' semifinal matchup a de facto battle for the title.

U.S. President Barack Obama appointed Jodi Gillette '91 as his senior policy advisor for Native American affairs on April 27. Gillette joins Timothy Geithner '83 as the latest Dartmouth alumnus in the Obama administration and will replace Kimberly Teehee in the position.

Dartmouth's 12 goals and six-goal margin of victory were both season highs, as was the team's four man-up goals. Goalkeeper Fergus Campbell '12 starred in his final game for the Big Green, notching 12 saves in the win. Eight of the 12 Big Green goals were scored by seniors.

Due to a quick offense and superior goalkeeping from Fergus Campbell '12, the Big Green made quick work of the Catamounts (2-12, 1-4 America East) on Tuesday. Drew Tunney '12 starred in the first quarter, notching an assist on a goal by Chris Costabile '13 under five minutes into the game before scoring a goal six minutes later off of a Kip Dooley '12 assist.

These athletes are relatively common at Division-I schools because colleges and universities across the country encourage many of their student-athletes to redshirt one year to be able to stay for a fifth year. A redshirt athlete can practice with the team for an entire season in which he or she is not technically a participant in the sport, thus gaining strength and experience that will benefit the player and the team in the future. An athlete generally redshirts as a freshman, a year when he or she is less likely to get significant playing time, or becomes a medical redshirt due to injury. Medical redshirts can participate in no more than 30 percent of his or her team's games in a season.

The Dartmouth men's lacrosse team got back on the right track with its first win in over a month on Saturday. The Big Green defeated the University of Pennsylvania at Scully-Fahey Field, 7-6, to snap an eight-game losing streak. The win propelled the Big Green to a 3-8 record (1-4 Ivy) and dropped the Quakers (3-9, 1-5 Ivy) to the bottom of the Ivy League standings. Due to the results of other games over the weekend, however, Dartmouth was eliminated from playoff contention.

College President Jim Yong Kim's election to World Bank presidency has created a maelstrom in media outlets worldwide, as commentators with varied opinions have emerged to consider issues ranging from Kim's credentials to the Bank's selection process. While some view Kim as inexperienced and unprepared, others said he will provide a unique worthwhile perspective at the Bank.
