The voters of the Democratic presidential primaries consist of three groups of people: those who really know Howard Dean, those who know Howard Dean through the media and those who want you to know the Howard Dean of their creation.

In Molly Ivins' scathing book on George W. Bush's Texas, "Shrub," there is a chapter that stands out from the rest. Amid the accounts of Bush's unsavory political connections and the train wreck of a criminal justice system he oversaw comes "The Bright Spot: Bush and Education." Indeed, education was supposedly one of the cornerstones of Bush's compassionate conservatism; the bi-partisan No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was hailed as a triumph. Unfortunately, the term "bright spot" is no longer applicable.

There's a Texan in Washington, D.C., right now whom we should all fear. He has immense power, and is completely convinced of the righteousness of his terrifying ideas. He does as he pleases, using demagoguery to attack his opponents, and cares little for the consequences of his actions. No, not that Texan.

When George W. Bush ran for president as a compassionate conservative, many of us who didn't know any better thought that silly comments were as bad as it could get. Don't vote for Bush, we thought, he's a buffoon! Sadly, in the words of Bush himself, we "misunderestimated" his capacity for harm. Now, three years later, here is the math of the war this President wrought.

I am a Californian. Yeah, go ahead and laugh. If I had a dollar for every time I heard somebody say "so what's going on over there in your state?" I'd be rich enough to actually benefit from the Bush tax cuts. I'd be so rich, I wouldn't even have to open the envelope containing the fat check from the Bush tax cuts myself. I could have Pierre, my French butler do it.

In another chapter in what may be one of the sadder stories of human history, it appears that the latest attempt at peace in the Middle East is doomed to failure. The work of the so-called quartet of the United States, United Nations, Russia and the European Union, the "Road Map to Peace" was presented formally by the State Department on April 30. It is a sequential approach, calling on both sides to take mutually beneficial steps in tandem in three phases, ending with the creation of a Palestinian state in 2005.

OK, Mr. Bush, here's your chance. You have been in office for more than two years now, and have done absolutely nothing to promote peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians. If you knew anything about the history of the conflict, you'd know that third parties are essential to the prospects for peace. Why? Because when left to their own devices, extremists on both sides are able easily to derail peace, using internal pressures to pull Israeli and Palestinian leaders away from the negotiating table.

It is a California winter, March 17, warm and green, and in the Berkeley Hills in the late afternoon, the wind pushes gently over the rooftops, lightly touching off the sound of chimes, faintly, as if from a distant bell tower. The sun migrates leisurely across the sky, making its way toward the Golden Gate Bridge and the endless ocean beyond. It is 5:45 p.m. on the West Coast, 8:45 in Washington D.C., 5:45 a.m. in Baghdad.

Recently, Rep. Howard Coble, R-N.C., expressed his satisfaction with the World War II internment of Japanese-Americans, sighting the danger these individuals faced from the general population. "They were an endangered species," Coble remarked during a Feb. 4 radio interview. Naturally, the course of action to take was forced internment in the desert, accompanied by barbed wire and armed soldiers. It's what the FBI does for participants in the witness protection program, right?

After the State of the Union address and the lackluster Democratic response, I found myself watching a focus group organized by Republican pollster Frank Luntz in response to Bush's address. Luntz asked the group to use two words to describe Bush's speech. That's easy, I thought: "evil" and "scary." I guess that's why I'm never picked for these focus groups.

Researchers at the California Institute of Technology have just released the results of an exhaustive nationwide survey of the beliefs of the American people. With 129,226 votes cast, Pop leads Soda by the slimmest of margins, 39.2 percent to 37.2 percent. We are truly a nation divided.

On Tuesday, Jan. 7, I had the pleasure of meeting Howard Dean. I was very excited and immediately emailed my family about what I considered a momentous occasion. With an exuberance that matched even my own, my sister wrote back immediately, "That's great! Who the hell is Howard Dean?" Good question.

Last month, while Trent Lott was busy attempting to extract his foot from his mouth, the Republican Party was in full spin- control mode, hoping to contain the damage to just Lott himself while leaving the rest of the party unscathed. Somewhere along the way, however, conservatives in the media got sidetracked and started talking about the double standard in existence with regards to Democratic Senator and former KKK member Robert Byrd of West Virginia, who recently received criticism, but not to the same degree as Lott, for using the term "white nigger."

The following is the story of two men whose lives intersected tragically in time and space. When dissecting this story, it is crucial to understand that both of these men are important, in what they did, how they lived and where they ended up. For to ignore one of these men is to ensure that his story is repeated time and time again
