Kresge Physical Sciences Library and Paddock Music Library will close permanently at the end of the academic year, Dartmouth announced on Tuesday. The College attributed the closures to decreased library lending numbers and budget cuts, both unrelated to the pandemic.

The College earned what dean of admissions and financial aid Lee Coffin referred to as the “triple crown” of admissions this year, setting three institutional records. In addition to the largest application pool for the first time since 2012 and the lowest admit rate in College history, 7.9 percent, the Class of 2023 also boasted Dartmouth’s highest final yield rate: 64 percent, up from 61 percent last year and 58 percent for the Class of 2021. The yield rate represents the portion of students offered admittance to the College who eventually chose to attend Dartmouth.

Students and community members gathered last Friday and Saturday to participate in the 38th annual Prouty, an athletic event which raises money for the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center. This year, participants and donors raised a record breaking total of over $3.3 million for the cancer center.

The archaeological excavation outside of Baker-Berry Library has come to a close, and buildings and grounds have filled the holes, following a more than two-week dig that involved Dartmouth students, professors and community volunteers. The team found a range of artifacts, from false teeth to a gold ring to a bone-handled knife.

On Monday evening, Dinesh D’Souza ’83 spoke at an event sponsored by the Dartmouth Republicans and the Young America Foundation. Over 200 people attended the event, and dozens of students and community members protested the speech through song, chants and signs. The event, part of Young America Foundation’s 10-campus “Dinesh D’Souza tour: Fake History Debunked,” took place in Filene Auditorium.

A 19-year-old male non-Dartmouth student was shot Friday night near the Christian Science Reading Room, located at 1 School Street. Hanover dispatch received the medical call around 9:45 p.m. The victim was taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and is in stable condition.

Members of the Class of 2022 will have to find a new source of exercise during Homecoming this year. The College is “truly on probation,” according to associate professor of engineering Douglas Van Citters; bonfire and surrounding festivities have been redesigned to respond to safety concerns after the town of Hanover denied the College’s permit request in late May. Following changes, the permit was approved on Sept. 28.

In a few months’ time, Hanover will be left without a place to buy newly released books. The Dartmouth Bookstore — Hanover’s Barnes and Noble — will close at the end of the calendar year, following a decision not to renew its lease, according to owner Jay Campion.

International students may need to be even more careful in the coming months, following a new federal policy issued by the U.S. Citizen and Immigration Services. The policy, which went into effect on Aug. 9, changes the way “unlawful presence” is calculated for students on the F, J and M visas.

Deer sightings in Hanover may not occur as frequently this year. On Aug. 29, the town of Hanover administered an additional 100 deer hunting permits for use this season. Each additional permit allows a hunter to harvest two extra deer from the town’s Deer Management Area, Hanover senior planner Vicki Smith said.
