Sam Morse, also known as Moose, is a phenomenal skier, excelling on both Team U.S.A. and at the Olympics. Because of his ski commitments, Morse has a unique 12-year D-Plan that enables him to devote time to his sport while simultaneously pursuing a mechanical engineering degree. He’s a friendly presence on campus, known for his kindness and commitment to skiing as well as the Dartmouth community. When he’s not engaged with his studies, he can be found on the slopes and spending time with his wife in Park City, Utah.

On June 10, Dartmouth announced that Sean Kirwan would take over as the new men’s lacrosse head coach. A former lacrosse player at Tufts University, Kirwan contributed to the team’s first-ever national championship and broke a school record by scoring 150 goals over the course of his collegiate career. Most recently, Kirwan served as the offensive coordinator for the University of Virginia, helping the Cavaliers to 2019 and 2021 national championship wins. The Dartmouth sat down with Kirwan to discuss his goals for the Big Green lacrosse team.

From July 19 to 23, five members of the Big Green men’s heavyweight rowing team competed at the 2023 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Jacob Hudgins ’23, Julian Thomas ’25 and Sammy Houdaigui ’25 competed for the United States, while Felix Rawlinson ’23 rowed for Great Britain and James Isles ’25 competed for Australia. Great Britain took home gold, the U.S. won silver, Germany captured bronze and Australia placed fourth in the Men’s Eight.

After coaching for Dartmouth women’s and lightweight rowing since 2017, Trevor Michelson was recently named head coach of the Dartmouth lightweight rowing team. Michelson had been serving as the interim head coach after Dan Roock’s retirement in 2022. The Dartmouth sat down with Michelson to catch up since the coach’s last Q&A.

After former men’s tennis head coach Xander Centenari stepped down last month, Justin DeSanto joins the Big Green as the new John Kenfield and Chuck Kinyon Head Coach of men’s tennis. DeSanto brings a decade of collegiate coaching experience, including his past two years of Division I head coaching experience at the University of Alabama Birmingham, where he brought the program to their first year-end Intercollegiate Tennis Association ranking to no. 70. The Dartmouth sat down with DeSanto to discuss his experiences with collegiate tennis coaching and his goals for men’s tennis.

The 2023 World Lacrosse Men’s Championship took place from June 21 to July 1 at San Diego State University in San Diego, California, with 30 teams collectively competing in more than 100 games. The Championship takes place every four years around the world, with the US hosting four since the tradition began in 1974. Ben DiGiovanni ’24, a player on the varsity men’s lacrosse team, represented the Republic of Korea at this year’s championship. The US won the trophy this year, and South Korea placed 26th.

Dartmouth requires all of its students to complete credits in the physical education department to graduate. Starting with the class of 2026, Dartmouth students must complete three credits, while students graduating in the 2024-2025 academic year are required to complete two. During the summer term, the physical education department offers several unique-to-summer classes that fulfill this requirement, including archery and sailing lessons.

On June 15, 26 rowers from across the country arrived on campus for the 2023 U23 Rowing Men’s Sweep Selection Camp, a three-week training ground which will last until July 7. Dartmouth last hosted the camp in 2015.

Following former head coach Adrienne Shibles’s resignation after the women’s basketball team went 2-26 last season, Linda Cimino will be taking over as head coach. Cimino has over 18 years of head coaching experience and most recently led the St. Francis Brooklyn College Terriers to a winning conference record. The Dartmouth sat down with Coach Cimino to discuss her experiences with both collegiate basketball and coaching.

During the Class of 1963’s 60th reunion, partners Stephen Lewinstein ’63 P’98 and Diana Lewinstein committed a record-breaking gift to the College in hopes of improving the experience and amenities for student-athletes, according to an announcement from Dartmouth News. The Lewinsteins’ son, Marc Lewinstein ’98, played on the men’s club rugby team.

On Friday, May 12, the sisters of Alpha Phi and Kappa Kappa Gamma sororities, as well as the brothers of Gamma Delta Chi fraternity, hosted “PHrIday KKniGht LiGDXghts,” a powderpuff football fundraiser in honor of Josh Balara ’24. Balara died at age 21 in March after a battle with stage four adrenal cancer. He was an offensive lineman on the Dartmouth football team and a member of GDX, and he is remembered for his warmth and sense of humor.

This past weekend, campus came together to celebrate Green Key weekend, one of the biggest social events at Dartmouth. Since almost all teams’ seasons have officially ended, sports coverage options were slim for us sports editors as we wrapped up Week 8 of the term. While we experienced Green Key, however, we noticed many parallels between this music festival-marathon and high-stakes, athletic competition. As we recover, we’ve realized how we approached the weekend from the perspective of athletes; thus, it deserves its spot in The Dartmouth’s Sports section. We hope you take away from this the lessons we learned from this year’s Green Key, so you may better prepare in the years to come.

For students across the country and around the globe, the collegiate student-athlete recruiting process kicks off in high school, when colleges typically recruit prospective students during their junior and senior years. Dartmouth’s unique location, coupled with its status as an Ivy League school, are two prominent components of the school’s Division I varsity student-athlete recruiting process. Two Dartmouth head coaches, two current student-athletes and two recruits from the class of 2027 shared their perspectives on the recruiting process.

The College offers a variety of different athletic opportunities, with 35 Division I Varsity sports, 34 club sports teams and many intramural sports offerings. Although many athletes are recruited, any student can become a walk-on athlete with the right amount of talent and dedication. Several students shared their experiences on crossing the line from NARPdom to student-athlete after arriving at Dartmouth.
