A force on the front line for the Dartmouth Big Green, Corey Kalk ’18 led the men’s ice hockey team this year as an alternate captain during a thrilling season. The men’s hockey team finished with a record of 16-17-2, and 11-0-1 in the Eastern College Athletic Conference. Kalk had a very productive season himself, with eight goals and 21 points, but statistics can’t begin to explain what Kalk meant to this hard-working group. Kalk is a natural born leader, and the “A” stitched on his jersey represented his knack for motivating others.

Dartmouth’s softball team is having a great season so far. The team currently stands at 10-5 in the Ivy League, good for second place in the conference behind Harvard University who sits at 13-5. Last weekend, the softball team not only added another win to its total, but did so while breaking an Ivy League record and earning recognition from the national media.

When approaching the season, most athletes agree that there is nothing that beats the feeling of being home. After a stretch of away games, things seem to come together effortlessly competing at home with an adoring crowd, playing on a familiar field or court and being surrounded by known officials. This week, The Dartmouth examines how that home field advantage affects the performance of the Big Green’s various athletic teams.

Matt Herzig ’17, a former member of the cross country and track and field teams at Dartmouth, finished in 12th place overall at the 2018 Boston Marathon with a time of 2:27:55 and a pace of 5:39. Isabella Caruso ’17, a former member of the Dartmouth Running Team and one of two current Dartmouth Teaching Science fellows in biology and chemistry, finished 40th in the women’s category and 37th in the 18-to-39 age division with a time of 2:56:18 and a pace of 6:44. The Dartmouth interviewed each of these runners about their experiences.

Alpine skiing captain Foreste Peterson ’18 led the Dartmouth Ski Team to a third place finish at this year’s NCAA Ski Championships, among its best results in years. The team captain, from Berkeley, California, has been among the most successful athletes for the Big Green at any level of competition over the last four years, with dual All-American First-Team honors and four All-East First Team honors. Along with this, Peterson competed at the FIS World Cup prior to the normal collegiate season this past fall, making her debut in Soelden, Austria in October 2017.

This past weekend, the United States Associate of Collegiate Fencing Clubs hosted the 2018 USACFC National Championships, in which the Dartmouth College Fencing Club took home a total of eight titles from the team and individual events, earning the overall combined championship title. Unlike most sports which require teams to earn bids for Nationals through regionals or other qualifying tournaments, all collegiate club fencing teams are automatically eligible to compete in Nationals.

The varsity eight for Dartmouth men’s heavyweight rowing has a new look this season with a trio of freshmen and a mix of three sophomores and a junior replacing their five departed rowers. The crew’s three freshmen, Caleb Edmundson ’21, Evan Dwinell ’21 and Paul Gralla ’21, form an atypically young roster as Austin Heye ’18, Noah Van Dyke ’18 and coxswain Jake Rauh ’18 are the only upperclassmen who have consistently filled varsity eight slots this season.

Four years and countless matches later, Alvin Heumann ’18 has reached the end of his incredible career with Dartmouth squash. Having been named to the All-Ivy First Team for his final two seasons, to the College Squash Association All-American team and as the Harrow Squash Player of the Week, Heumann has dominated the courts and been a cornerstone member of the squash team.

In a basketball season marked by parity and scandal, it was only fitting that the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship was won by a team which made one of the most dominant runs in recent history while led by a clean-cut coach, referring both to his lack of involvement in the most recent benefits scandal and to the fact that he’s always dressed to the nines with his suits.
