Brown University: Karla Kaun, assistant professor of neuroscience at Brown University, has obtained a three-year grant worth $300,000 for her work on alcohol and memory studies, the Brown Daily Herald reports. Supported by the grant, which was awarded by the Smith Family Awards Program for Excellence in Biomedical Research, Kaun will study fruit flies’ propensity for alcohol with the intention of discovering treatment methods for alcohol addiction.

Ranking Hanover’s Best Hot Chocolate

(01/16/15 2:18pm)

What Dartmouth student hasn’t spent countless hours wondering where in Hanover to get the best hot chocolate? The answer, I think, is none, particularly during this bitingly cold winter. So in the self-sacrificing nature of journalism, on a quest to answer this question, I put myself on the line. When Darbeat called, I volunteered to force myself to drink cup after cup of hot chocolate — just so Dartmouth students could sleep a little bit better at night.

FoCo Joe: FoCo Snowman

(01/13/15 1:56pm)

Do you want to build a snowman? I do not want to build a snowman. Though campus is beautiful right now in its covering of freshly fallen snow, I am not anticipating a day outdoors with my friends anytime soon. In fact, I eagerly anticipate remaining indoors. Does that mean that I am not a fan of the winter? Absolutely not. As a student at Dartmouth, I have to give credit to this College on the Hill for opening my eyes to the joy of this coldest of seasons. FoCo consistently serves different kinds of chili and buildings are over-heated to an appropriate temperature. That one time I went sledding on the golf course was a highlight of my Dartmouth experience. I could go on, but I won’t, because more importantly Dartmouth winters have taught me to look out for the things that make me happy — this column, for example, which I started during the dark days of 13W.

(01/09/15 2:25pm)

Even the biggest Scrooge can get hit with post-holiday blues. Your sparkling lights come down and you realize that you won’t receive any more gifts this winter. Suddenly it’s a new year, and you have to face all of this while dealing with a massive hangover. Here @Dartbeat, we know that one of the worst things about this time of year – well beyond having to go back to work and school – is that you can no longer enjoy listening to holiday music. Unfortunately, even the most aggressive radio stations seem to take holiday music off the air by January.

15W: A Winter Activities Bucket List

(01/08/15 9:22pm)

Winter is upon us, and here @Dartbeat we know that the seemingly constant falling snow and impending darkness can leave you streaming hours of Netflix in your dorm room. So, to help fight the pressing temptation to hide under your blanket and watch the snow fall through your window, we’ve put together a list of ten fun activities you can enjoy around campus this quarter. Sure, winter can be dark. But if you get out there and embrace it, we promise that it might begin to brighten:
