The Dartmouth sat down with Claire VeNard, newly appointed Dartmouth Athletics chief of staff, to discuss her career path and her hopes for the new role. After competing for four years on the Notre Dame women’s soccer team and graduating with a national championship win under her belt, she earned a J.D. as well as a Master’s degree in higher education administration and public policy. VeNard discussed how her past experiences as a student athlete and in higher education affect how she approaches her work at Dartmouth.


Q&A with new women’s rowing head coach John Graves

In a series of coach hirings, John Graves was recently named the new head coach of the women’s rowing team. Graves has served as an assistant coach for the men’s heavyweight team for the last two years. Before Graves coached the Dartmouth heavyweight team to a top 10 rank, he helped the University of Texas’s heavyweight rowing team win a national championship in 2021. The Dartmouth sat down with Graves to learn more about how his work with the heavyweight team and his past as a rower have influenced his coaching philosophy.


Dartmouth baseball players step up to the plate in summer league ball

For collegiate baseball players, summer is far from a break, as they trade textbooks for gloves and the lecture hall for the pitcher’s mound. Although summer leagues vary by duration, region and skill requirement, each offers a unique opportunity for NCAA student athletes — allowing them to hone their skills, maintain shape in the off-season and improve their potential draft-stock for Major League scouts and recruiters. The Dartmouth sat down with baseball players at the College to find out why they chose to devote their summers to such demanding leagues. 


Q&A with Olympian and Team U.S.A. skier Sam “Moose” Morse ’20

Sam Morse, also known as Moose, is a phenomenal skier, excelling on both Team U.S.A. and at the Olympics. Because of his ski commitments, Morse has a unique 12-year D-Plan that enables him to devote time to his sport while simultaneously pursuing a mechanical engineering degree. He’s a friendly presence on campus, known for his kindness and commitment to skiing as well as the Dartmouth community. When he’s not engaged with his studies, he can be found on the slopes and spending time with his wife in Park City, Utah.


Q&A with new men’s lacrosse head coach Sean Kirwan

On June 10, Dartmouth announced that Sean Kirwan would take over as the new men’s lacrosse head coach. A former lacrosse player at Tufts University, Kirwan contributed to the team’s first-ever national championship and broke a school record by scoring 150 goals over the course of his collegiate career. Most recently, Kirwan served as the offensive coordinator for the University of Virginia, helping the Cavaliers to 2019 and 2021 national championship wins. The Dartmouth sat down with Kirwan to discuss his goals for the Big Green lacrosse team.


Five members of men’s heavyweight rowing race at the 2023 World Rowing U23 Championships

From July 19 to 23, five members of the Big Green men’s heavyweight rowing team competed at the 2023 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Jacob Hudgins ’23, Julian Thomas ’25 and Sammy Houdaigui ’25 competed for the United States, while Felix Rawlinson ’23 rowed for Great Britain and James Isles ’25 competed for Australia. Great Britain took home gold, the U.S. won silver, Germany captured bronze and Australia placed fourth in the Men’s Eight.


Q&A with new head lightweight rowing coach Trevor Michelson

After coaching for Dartmouth women’s and lightweight rowing since 2017, Trevor Michelson was recently named head coach of the Dartmouth lightweight rowing team. Michelson had been serving as the interim head coach after Dan Roock’s retirement in 2022. The Dartmouth sat down with Michelson to catch up since the coach’s last Q&A.


Q&A with new head coach of men’s tennis Justin DeSanto

After former men’s tennis head coach Xander Centenari stepped down last month, Justin DeSanto joins the Big Green as the new John Kenfield and Chuck Kinyon Head Coach of men’s tennis. DeSanto brings a decade of collegiate coaching experience, including his past two years of Division I head coaching experience at the University of Alabama Birmingham, where he brought the program to their first year-end Intercollegiate Tennis Association ranking to no. 70. The Dartmouth sat down with DeSanto to discuss his experiences with collegiate tennis coaching and his goals for men’s tennis.


Men’s lacrosse represented at 2023 World Lacrosse Men’s Championship

The 2023 World Lacrosse Men’s Championship took place from June 21 to July 1 at San Diego State University in San Diego, California, with 30 teams collectively competing in more than 100 games. The Championship takes place every four years around the world, with the US hosting four since the tradition began in 1974. Ben DiGiovanni ’24, a player on the varsity men’s lacrosse team, represented the Republic of Korea at this year’s championship. The US won the trophy this year, and South Korea placed 26th. 


Sailing and archery lessons offer students unique opportunities to earn PE credit

Dartmouth requires all of its students to complete credits in the physical education department to graduate. Starting with the class of 2026, Dartmouth students must complete three credits, while students graduating in the 2024-2025 academic year are required to complete two. During the summer term, the physical education department offers several unique-to-summer classes that fulfill this requirement, including archery and sailing lessons.
