The Big Green began the game with characteristic intensity, setting an attacking pace and keeping the ball primarily in Penn's (7-5-1, 3-1 Ivy) end of the field. The intensity paid off early when Dartmouth was awarded a corner kick in the 13th minute of play.

The inability of the temporary referees to control professional games highlighted the difference in skill required to officiate games at various levels and damaged the integrity of the league for the duration of their stint. The replacement referee controversy, however, brought an uncharacteristic amount of attention and appreciation to the officiating profession.

While our modern economy may be complex, at its foundation much of it is intuitive especially the simple, everyday act of buying and selling. I take something I own and give it to you for a price that we both agree is fair, and both of us walk away with what we want. As long as I didn't steal what I sold to you or it wasn't illegal to possess it in the first place, then there's no problem.

As our Facebook news feeds have become flooded with countless statuses imbued with overstated love for mysterious "bigs" and house letters forced into corny puns, we know that pledge term is well underway. Of course, there is no reason that pledges shouldn't be excited about their newfound affiliation. Yet the atmosphere surrounding pledge term can often be, to put it bluntly, obnoxious. While the eruption of Facebook activity and rampant flair can get old, it is still harmless and mostly funny. The real problem with pledge terms runs much deeper than this superficial frivolity. With both fraternity and sorority pledge terms, the real problem manifests itself in condescending and sexist complexes adopted by pledges who get swept up in something they perceive to be much bigger than themselves.

"The Birds" rarely receives credit as a contributor to Alfred Hitchcock’s designation as the “Master of Suspense.” However, as a desolate disaster film combining horror, romance, and even Western elements, it equals and may even surpass Psycho in resonance. Finally, in a year when Hitchcock has reemerged as a cultural icon — prompted, perhaps by "Vertigo" (1958) unseating "Citizen Kane" (1941) as Sight & Sound’s greatest film of all time— "The Birds" and "Psycho" (1960) are getting equal attention as seminal works in Hitchcock’s oeuvre. Two films, "Hitchcock"(2012), which will premiere on Nov. 23and "The Girl" (2012)on Oct. 20will explore the intricacies of those two chilling films this fall.

Much to my chagrin, the wide world of sports is becoming even wider, and in the process, more transparent. While the diminishing opacity of professional sports is invaluable for penetrating journalists, documentarians and producers, the casual sports fan is being exposed to the realities of the average athlete, and the picture is not always pretty.
