Vann Island
A lot of people have been asking me about what has changed to make the Island become so emotional over the last couple of weeks. The truth of the matter is that nothing has changed. "Love Actually" (2003) and "The Notebook" (2004) are still among my favorite movies, and The Fray's "Over My Head" obviously remains in my "Top 25 Most Played" on iTunes. So when there is a moving story in the world of sports that resonates with me, you bet I'm going to write about it.

Hoyt: Celebrating Stress
Everywhere you go on campus, you'll likely hear someone lament, "I'm stressed." "I've got a lot going on." "Sorry, I can't. I'm busy." "I'm not free I'm having a really rough term." We throw around these phrases with reckless abandon.
Haynes: Hype Paralysis
Hype can be a cruel mistress. Expectations frequently overwhelm the achievements young stars actually accomplish. Our current age of the Internet makes this buzz paralyzing and all-encompassing. It also offers a sinister potential: The blogosphere can skyrocket anyone to fame. Riding this wave of buzz is a challenge that few manage successfully. Hype, then, threatens to overwhelm the strengths of the individual with abstract promises of fame; resisting these buffeting winds of ego-boosting hype becomes the central challenge for up-and-coming stars.
Daily Debriefing
In the largest ever study of academic articles analyzing gender of the authors, University of Washington researchers found a continued gender gap in scholarly publications and a concentration of women authors in certain subject areas, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported. An analysis of 2 million journal articles in JSTOR showed that the percentage of female authors publishing in their fields is increasing but that they tend to cluster in certain subfields and are underrepresented in the prestigious positions of first and last authors. The overall percentage of female authors is also not representative of the proportion entering professorial positions. Women are underrepresented in publications because they value quality over quantity and spend more time teaching, working with committees and caring for children, The Chronicle reported. Opinion among scholars interviewed is split on whether the gap is a result of women's choices or discrimination.

Dartbeat wishes BlitzMail a final farewell
Long lines at Blitz terminals: The Class of 2016 might wonder why there are computers placed in the most random locations all over campus. Well, I am here today to tell you that yes, people used to line up at those terminals to check their emails in between classes and events, and yes, people did strategically place themselves in front of those machines to maximize facetime during a time when iPhones and smartphone applications weren’t as common (circa 2008). It wasn’t uncommon to see Novack-level lines during the 10 minutes in between classes, even at terminals placed in groups of three at the same location. Those lineups escalated quickly.
