‘Portable Vision' showcases artist Riley's abstract collection
"As I work and as I begin to react formally to what's happening on the canvas, the paintings and drawings will begin to move toward something that might be familiar, and then I'll try to follow that sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't," Riley said. Sellers: Putting the "Girl" in "New Girl"
Zooey Deschanel is sweet. She's the type of sickening sweet that lingers, coating your mouth. She's a steaming apple pie, with brown sugar baked into the crust and a generous helping of ice cream on the side. The problem is that our society is diabetic. Although she seems wholesome and American, those apples are poisonous and may lead to a regression of this country's feminist thought.
Brooks: Use and Abuse of Hazing Practices
"Good get into the rain room right now!" he yelled. The rain room was the affectionate name given to the showers. As I ran into the showers with five of my other companions, I could only wonder what he had in store for us. As we entered the shower, he told us to stand along the wall and take a seated position. The six of us sat along the wall with our hands held straight out in front of us. We looked like human replicas of chairs. "Good. Hold this position for 10 minutes. If any of you drop, I'm restarting the time!" "Great," I thought. One of my companions let's call him Johnson was weak. We might be there a while.
Daily Debriefing
A study conducted by the Community College Research Center at Columbia University's Teachers College found that "College 101" courses that aim to improve students' skills and improve graduation and retention rates need to adopt more specific strategies to be successful, The Chronicle of Higher Education reported. The report, "College 101 Courses for Applied Learning and Student Success," evaluated courses at three community colleges in Virginia, relying partially on interviews with approximately 170 administrators, instructors and students. Students surveyed said that the courses, which incorporate skills such as time management, goal setting, balancing a checkbook and retirement planning, are too broad to effectively teach the intended skills, The Chronicle reported. Despite the popularity of such courses, which are offered by about 87 percent of colleges, staffing choices and duration render them ineffective, according to the study.
