For much of the last month, a nation of millions has been glued to the television, awestruck as it witnesses the destructive power of nature and, in its aftermath, the shameful exposure of our society's inadequacies. Sadly but luckily, my first awareness of black people and their culture came from hip-hop. Due to the persistent segregation of Southern neighborhoods and self-segregation in spite of forcible integration at southern schools, opportunities for meaningful relationships between white and black children remain low in Nashville, Tenn. Luckily, through hip-hop I had come to realize the depth, intelligence and pure artistic beauty of African-American self-expression.

Had Noah Riner opened his convocation speech with "I'm gay," this wouldn't be happening. That's not Noah, but if it were, no one would have resigned. No one would be organizing protests. If there were any Op-eds or outcries, they would be praising his ability to encourage individualism and progressivism in Dartmouth.

The six films chosen by the Dartmouth Film Society from the Telluride Film Festival were picked not necessarily because they were the festival's best films, but rather because they were considered the most representative of Telluride's entire collection. Memory and repression all play crucial roles in the three films that I watched -- the Parisian mystery "Cach (Hidden)," Middle Eastern masterpiece "Paradise Now" and the uniquely American film noir "Edmond."

There's a certain element of mysticism and magic to the music of Led Zeppelin: it's an intangible quality that, even back in 1969 -- when their phenomenal self-titled debut album was released -- distinguished the band from its varied and eclectic influences, ranging from blues to British folk. Today, Robert Plant and company are widely considered the forefathers of hard rock and metal -- yes, even more so than Black Sabbath -- and their influence can still be felt today.
