No, the first time isn't easy. It's unfamiliar and uncomfortable. But everyone is doing it in 2004 -- in their home states or in New Hampshire; by mail or at Town Hall -- and it's ultimately rewarding to share in an act most people have enjoyed for years.

Intrigued by the recent idylls and rants in The Dartmouth concerning our U.S. News ranking (August 24, "Dartmouth ranked ninth -- again"), I decided to peruse a copy of the magazine myself to see what all the fuss was about. I have long been a skeptic of such numeric ratings and dread the damaging incentives they create in the college admissions "game," especially given their frequent political motivations. Nevertheless, in examining the rankings, I noticed that Dartmouth is among the worst of top-notch schools in providing small classes, a category which is rightfully given significant weight in the rankings.

The Amos Tuck School of Business Administration has finished near the top of yet another set of business school rankings, due largely to high marks from corporate recruiters who praised the workplace abilities of the school's graduates. The Wall Street Journal rankings placed Tuck third overall, a slight decline from recent years.

For some reason -- who knows why -- this year has been a standout for rap and hip hop. DJ Danger Mouse, by illegally mixing the Jigga man with the Fab Four, made one of rap's most innovative albums in years. Kanye West amazingly straddled the line between critical acclaim and love of the masses, proving to be just as intelligent in his spitting as he is in his mixing. And the rap group that every indie rocker loves, The Roots, continued their amazing success with a new fantastic album.

Maybe it's my idealism faltering after a summer away from the free-thinking Dartmouth environment, or maybe my cynicism has finally gotten the best of me. Either way, I recently arrived at a point of disgust and extreme intolerance. Call me politically incorrect, call me insensitive, but I truly believe that I will lose my cool if I see another "Live Strong" yellow wristband or even more yellow "Support Our Troops" ribbon magnets 'round an ol' SUV.

During my four years at the College, I lived in North Fayerweather. Though I spent plenty of time out of Hanover on the Mainz LSA, on an exchange program with UCSD, working and traveling, I was always able to return to Hanover and move back into North Fayer.

To students, draft is a very frightening word. It implies certain death or injury in a war. A war which, college students that we are, is by default -- and take your pick here -- unjust, immoral, evil, imperialistic, oil-driven, politically-motivated or, to quote Kofi Annan, just plain "illegal." A draft is not to be taken lightly.

President Wright delivered his annual Convocation speech on Tuesday. He used this opportunity to berate a political and media culture that seems to focus on trivial subjects at the cost of intelligent discussion of substantive issues. Wright made two important points on this subject, and both add value to the current national political contest and the continuing development of the College.
